Points to be covered-
 Introduction to ‘Plastics’ & Plastic waste.
 Adverse effects of plastic waste.
 Methods ,Technology & rules to control plastic waste.
 Advantages & Disadvantages of plastic waste
management.
Introduction to Plastic
 The word plastic was derived from the word ‘plastikos’
which means ‘ to mould’ in greek.Plastic was
discovered by German chemist ‘Christian Schonbein’
in 1846.
Composition of Plastics
Oxygen

Carbon &
Hydrogen Plastic Nitrogen

Chlorine
PLASTIC WASTE
 ‘Plastics’ Which we no longer need are known as
“Plastic Waste”. e.g.-plastic bottles, carry bags etc.
Improper dispose of the plastic is affecting the
environment & is harming the animals.
Plastic Waste Management
 Managing the plastic waste by recycling or using latest
technologies to minimize their effect on environment
is known as “Plastic waste management”.

Environmental concern
 To save our environment from plastic waste
we can use the 6 ‘R’s.

REDUCE
REUSE
REFUSE
REMOVE
RECYCLE
RALLY
Adverse effects of plastic waste-
The world population is living, working, vacationing,
along the coasts, and standing on the front row of the
greatest, most unprecedented, plastic waste tide ever
faced.Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic end
up in our oceans which is dangerous for aquatic life.
Effects on Human health
“PLASTIC IS FANTASTIC”
Plastic is really all around us in the form of food
&beverages containers , pens, laptops, packaging etc
which contains plastic polymers or resins.
 Such plastic have additives in it which can affect the
Endocrine system which regulates the vital body
functions which are as below-

METABOLISM

HEART RATE

DIGESTION

TEMPRATURE

Environmental Concern
 Ecosystem Alteration
Efforts to remove marine debris can harm ecosystems.
Mechanical beach raking uses a tractor or other
mechanical device to remove marine debris from
beaches and marine shorelines and can adversely
impact shoreline habitats.
Transport of Invasive Species
 The increase in marine litter, in particular plastics has
resulted in a corresponding increase in species
invasion.

Invasive Species Are Riding on Plastic Across

the Oceans
Methods ,Technology & rules to control
plastic waste.
 The plastic waste needs to be controlled or
managed properly.
 Recycling of plastics through environmentally
sound manner. PRIMARY

 Plastic recycling technologies have been

divided into 4 types-

QUATERNARY
RECYCLING
SECONDARY

TERITARY

Environmental concern
To minimize this plastic waste using
alternatives of plastics such as for a plastic bag we can
use a cloth bag or a reusable bag.
Recycling the waste produce into new products.
Advantages of plastic waste
management
 The plastic waste management involves the collection
and disposal of both hazardous or non-hazardous
plastic.
•Advantages are as follows-

This practice is highly lucrative:

The Journal of Waste management says that the revenues generated by

the waste management would top by $60 million by 2018.

Keeps the environment clean and fresh:

Perhaps, the greatest advantage of waste management is keeping the

environment fresh and neat.
Saves the Earth and conserves energy

Recycling needs only a minimal amount of energy for utilization and complete
processing. The resultant product we obtain is a renewable source of energy and is eco-
friendly.

Reduces environmental pollution:

eliminates the surrounding waste but also will reduce the intensity of the greenhouse
gases like methane, carbon monoxide which is emitted from the wastes accumulated.
Environmental concern
 Plastic recycling helps to reducethe consumptions of
fresh raw materials or resources.
 Recycling old products into new products reduce the
amount of waste that goes into landfills such as
recycling 1 ton plastic can save upto 7.4cubic yards of
landfills
Disadvantages of plastic waste
management-
1. The process is not always cost-effective:
Yes, though it may pay cash to the contributors, the truth is this
process needs a lot of money, time and land to set up a plant
and run.

2. The resultant product has a short life:

This is also true since the resulting recycled product
cannot be expected to have a durable quality.

3. The sites are often dangerous

these sites are highly susceptible to fungal and bacterial growth
thereby leading to various diseases.
4. The practices are not done uniformly:
Still, a large scale of these waste management
practices are done only as a small scale process and is
mostly confined to residential homes, schools, and
colleges and is not practiced in a uniform manner in
large industries

• 5. Waste management can cause more

problems:
• Though waste management creates employment,
it only has the ability to produce low-quality jobs
Environmental concern
 1. Lack of proper collection and management.
 2. The 'throw away culture' result in these bags finding their way in the city drainage
system and thus choking the drains.
 3. Littering of land by plastic bags presents an ugly and unhygienic scene
 4. The littering also reduces rate of rain water percolation resulting in lowering water
table levels.
 5. Plastics go into the water bodies which are already polluted due to many sources. Fish
and other aquatic animals
swallow plastic garbage mistaken as food items.
 6. Plastics become a nuisance because of their non-biodegradability.
 7. Animals eating carry bags sometimes die.
 8. Soil fertility deteriorates as plastic bags form part of manure and remain in soil for
years.
 9. Polythene bags if burnt release highly toxic gases like phosgene, carbon monoxide,
chlorine, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen
oxide beside deadly dioxins.
 10. Requires large are for disposal and there are further waste disposal impactsrelated to
land fills and incineration.
THANK YOU
 We would like to express my special thanks of gratitude
to my teacher M.R. Patil sir, who gave us the golden
opportunity to do this wonderful seminar on the topic
Plastic Waste Management, which also helped me in
doing a lot of Research and i came to know about so
many new things.
