Project Brief (max 200 words):The Bede community is a unique and fascinating culture in
Bangladesh, with a rich tradition of nomadic water-based living and performance art. The
design proposal aims to address cultural conservation, disaster and socio-economic
resiliency, and break the taboo between the Bede community and the general public.
The design will use the Bede community's traditional boat-making techniques and
incorporate modular living spaces that can be assembled into a larger platform for
performance art shows. The boats will serve as both living spaces and modes of
transportation, allowing the community to continue their nomadic lifestyle while also
providing a platform for showcasing their incredible skills with monkey and snake
handling, music, dance, and storytelling.
This design proposal will be mutually beneficial for the Bede community, the general public,
and the government of Bangladesh by promoting cultural conservation, economic resiliency,
disaster resiliency, and breaking down cultural barriers. It is a celebration of the unique
and fascinating culture of the Bede community and an opportunity to learn from and appreciate
their incredible talents and way of life.
The project will be specifically developed with the Bede community in Gazipur,
Bangladesh, with a focus on enhancing their quality of life and preserving their cultural
heritage.
