The Electrical Age was born in 1881 when Thomas
Alva Edison invented the incandescent lamp (1879).
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM DESIGN

• What is meant by “Electrical system Design”?

 Electrical systems are groups of electrical components

connected to carry out some operation.
 Electrical design entails –

• Planning, creating, testing, or supervising the development

and installation of electrical equipment, including lighting
equipment, power systems, power distribution, fire and life
safety systems, electronic components, and voice and data
communications infrastructure.
 Electrical Design Procedure -

Where should start?

• Design engineers must take into consideration a wide variety of elements
that can affect the final product. They must address many questions
before developing the final prototype, such as:
• What is the product used for?

• What are the key features?

• What is the power source?

• Under what environmental conditions will the product operate,

including temperature, moisture, humidity and pressure?
INDIAN STANDARD IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

 IS code –

 Standard Formulation

 The erstwhile Indian Standards Institution (ISI) was established

in the year 1947 (now Bureau of Indian Standards) with the
objective of harmonious development of standardization activity
in India.
 Under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986, Bureau establishes
Indian Standards in relation to any article or process and amends,
revises or cancels the standards so established as may be necessary,
by a process of consultation involving consumers, manufacturers,
Government and regulatory bodies, technologists, scientists and
testing laboratories through duly constituted committees.
 General Awareness of IS codes [Electrical Engineering]–
 IS 732 - Code of practice for electrical wiring installations (System voltage not
extending 650V).

 IS 3043 - Code of practice for earthing.

 IS 2026 – Part – I - Power Transformer – general

- Part –II – Transformer Temperature rise:

 IS 3646 - Part-I - Code of practice for interior illumination, part-I
General requirements & recommendations for
working interiors.
- Part-II – schedule for values of Illumination & Glare index.
 IS 5216 - Part-I - Recommendation on Safety Procedures and
practices in Electrical Work.
- Part-II - Life Saving Techniques.
 Electricity supply code 2014

- (1) This code shall be called the Kerala electricity supply code 2014.

- (2) This Code shall be applicable to,-

(i) all distribution licensees including deemed licensees and all

consumers and users in the State of Kerala; and

(ii) all other persons and institutions who are exempted under
Section 13 of the Act.
IS 732: - CODE OF PRACTICE FOR ELECTRICAL WIRING
INSTALLATIONS (System voltage not extending 650V)

 SCOPE:

 1.1 This code covers the essential requirements and precautions regarding
wiring installations for ensuring satisfactory and reliable service and
safety from all possible hazards from the use of electricity.

 1.2.This code applies to the design, selection, erection and inspection and
testing of wiring installations whether permanent or temporary in and
about buildings.
 1.3 It relates to all wiring installations in non-industrial and industrial
locations, whether the electric supply is derived from an external source
or from a private generating plant.

 1.4 Installations utilizing nominal voltage ranges not exceeding 50V AC

or 120V DC, between conductors or earth and voltage exceeding extra-
low voltage but not exceeding 1kV AC or 1500V DC between conductors
or 600V AC or 900 V DC between conductors & Earth.
 1.5 this code covers all general guidelines applicable to installations
operating within the range given in 1.4 above.

 1.6 This code is not applicable to the following:

a) Systems for distribution of energy to the public or to power

generation and transmission for such systems.
b) Wiring installations in special locations such as mines or other
areas where potentially explosive atmosphere exists.

c) Lighting conductors, telecommunications and alarm systems.

d) Traction installations, motor vehicles, installations on board

ships, aircrafts or offshore installations.
 SCOPE:

 1.1 This code of practice gives guidance on the methods that may be
adopted to earth an electrical system for the purpose of limiting the
potential of current carrying conductors forming part of the system, ie,
system earthing and non- current carrying metal work association with
equipment, apparatus and appliance connected to the system.

 1.2 This code applies only to land-based installations and it does not apply
to ships, aircrafts or offshore installations.
IS 2026: - Power Transformers
Part -I: General
 SCOPE:

 This standard (Part 1) applies to three-phase and single-phase power

transformers (including auto-transformers) with the exception of
certain categories of small and special transformers such as:
a) Single-phase transformers with rated power less than 1 kVA and three-phase transformers
less than 5 kVA; b) Instrument transformers; c) transformers for static convertors; d) traction
transformers mounted on rolling stock; e) starting transformers; f) Testing transformers; and
g) welding transformers.
Part -II: Temperature Rise

 SCOPE:

 This standard (Part 2) identifies transformers according to their

cooling methods, defines temperature-rise limits and details the
methods of test for temperature-rise measurements. It also
applies to transformers as defined in the scope of IS 2026 (Part 1)
IS 3646: Code of practice for interior illumination
Part -I: General requirements & recommendations for working interiors.

 SCOPE:

 This code ( part I) covers the principles and practice governing

good lighting in buildings and relates chiefly to the lighting of
working areas in industrial, commercial, and public buildings,
hospitals and schools.
Part -II: Schedule for values of illumination and glare index.

 SCOPE:

 This code ( part II) covers the recommended values of

illumination and limiting values of glare index.

• Illumination values- series: 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 100, 150, 200,
300, 450, 700, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 lux.
• Glare index series: 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28.
