Abstract-Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors are
increasingly being used in industrial applications and electric
vehicles. In order to design and control the machine for high dynamic performance, as well as for real-time fault diagnosis of the BLDC drives, analytical modeling is often the first step. This paper presents a survey of different ways of modeling and analysis of BLDC motors along with their control methods.Along with the conventional BLDC control, different modern control algorithms like state feedback control mechanism and novel technique of IC based control algorithm are widely being used for controlling the motor, which are reported in the paper as well.BLDC motor is modeled and simulated and the simulations results are included in the paper. Lastly, major applications of BLDC motors are listed Index Terms: Brushless Direct Current (BLDC),Electric Power Steering (EPS), Special Electrical Motors. I. INTRODUCTION Historically, brushed dc and conventional ac electric motors (such as induction and synchronous motors) are being used very widely. However, recent advancements in permanent magnet technology, power electronics and controllers have made special electrical motors, such as Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM), Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) and Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motors (PM BLDC) much more suitable for efficient drive operation. These motors are characterized by a higher efficiency, greater reliability, and more power density requiring less maintenance [I]. Depending upon the requirements, these motors find applications in various electrical systems. Some of the most desirable features of this motor which make it suitable for high performance applications are - higher torque to motor size ratio, high efficiency and long life. Due to these characteristics, BLDC motors are widely used for industrial applications and the research in this area has experienced a rapid growth in recent years. Many researchpublications have reported novel techniques for BLDC motor design and analysis. New control algorithms are being developed for efficient motor. Several recent publications emphasize on the improvement of the efficiency, reduction of torque ripples and fault diagnosis of BLDC motors. This paper makes an attempttocollectrelevant information with respect to the modeling andanalysis of BLDC motors. Various parameter estimation techniques arediscussed in detail as well. Along with the conventional control methods, innovative control algorithmssuch asstate feedback control mechanism and novel technique of IC based control algorithm are discussed as well.Lastlythe applications of BLDC motorsalong with the benefits of replacing conventional motors with these motors have been described.
