Part 1: The Old Man and Old Woman

むかし、 むかし、 ある ところ に
おじいさん と おばあさん が いました。
Mukashi, mukashi, aru tokoro ni
ojiisan to obaasan ga imashita.
Long, long ago, in some place…
There was an old man and and old woman.
おじいさん が やま へ き を きり に いけば、
おばあさん は かわ へ せんたく に でかけます。
Ojiisan ga yama e ki o kiri ni ikeba,
obaasan wa kawa e sentaku ni dekakemasu.
When the old man went to the mountain to cut trees,
the old woman went out to the river to wash clothes.
（dailogue）
まいにち やさしく いい あって でかけます。
Mainichi yasashiku ii atte dekakemasu.
Each day they gently say that to each other and go out.

Part 2: The Giant Peach

ある ひ、 おばあさん が かわ で せんたく を していたら、
どんぶらこ どんぶらこ もも が ながれてきました。
Aru hi, obaasan ga kawa de sentaku o shiteitara,
donburako donburako momo ga nagarete kimashita.
One day, while the old woman was washing clothes at the river…
A tumbling peach floated up.
ひろって たべたら、 なんとも おいしくて ほっぺた が おちそう。
Hirotte tabetara, nantomo oishikute hoppeta ga ochisou.
She picked it up, ate it, and it was so delicious that her cheeks look as if
it’s going to fall.

おじいさん にも たべさせて あげたい と おもって、
(dialogue)
どんぶらこ どんぶらこ でっかい もも が ながれてきました。
Donburako, donburako dekkai momo ga nagaretekimashita.
A tumbling huge peach floated up.
おばあさん は よろこんで、 もも を いえ に もって かえりました。
Obaasan wa yorokonde, momo o ie ni motte kaerimashita.
The old woman was happy, and took the peach home.

Part 3: A Baby Boy

ゆうがた おじいさん が やま から もどってきました。
Yuugata ojiisan ga yama kara modottekimashita.
In the evening the old man returned from the mountain.
(dialogue)
おばあさん が きろう と したら、 もも が じゃくっと われ、
ほぎゃあ ほぎゃあ おとこ の あかんぼう が とびだしました。
Obaasan ga kirou to shitara, momo ga jakutto ware,
Hogyaa hogyaa otoko no akanbou ga tobidashimashita
When the old woman tried to cut it, the peach popped and split open
Then a crying baby boy suddenly appear.

Part 4: They named him Momotaro

(dialogue)
ふたり は あわてて おゆ を わかす やら きもの を さがす やら。
futari wa awatete oyu o wakasu yara kimono o sagasu yara
They both hurriedly boiled water and looked for a kimono and so on.
ふたり は この こ に ももたろう と いう なまえ を つけ、
futari wa kono ko ni momotarou to iu namae o tsuke
They both gave the name Momotarou to this child,

それ は それ は だいじ に そだてました。
sore wa sore wa daiji ni sodatemashita
and brought him up with so much care.

Part 5: A special child

ももたろう は まんま を いっぱい たべたら いっぱい だけ、
momotarou wa manma o ippai tabetara ipai dake
If Momotarou ate one cup of rice he grew one cup,
にはい たべたら にはい だけ
nihai tabetara nihai dake
if he ate two cups he grew two cups
ずんずん おおきく なって、
zunzun ookiku natte
He quickly became large
たいへんな ちからもち に なりました。
taihen na chikaramochi ni narimashita
and came to be a very strong boy
なに を おしえて も すぐ おぼえ、
nani o oshiete mo sugu oboe
Whatever they teach him he learns quickly,
いえ の しごと から やま の しごと まで てつだって くれました。
ie no shigoto kara yama no shigoto made tetsudatte kuremashita
and from house work to mountain work he helped them.
(dialogue)
おじいさん も おばあさん も
ojiisan mo obaasan mo
The old man and the old woman

いよいよ ももたろう を かわいがりました。
iyoiyo momotarou o kawaigarimashita
loved Momotarou more and more.

Part 6: A startling request

ところ が、その ころ、
tokoro ga, sono koro
But, at that time,
おに ども が ちょくちょく むら へ やってきて は
oni domo ga chokuchoku mura e yattekite wa
demons often approached the village
わるい こと を して いました。
warui koto o shite imashita
and were doing bad things.
(dialogue)
あるひ、 ももたろう は おじいさん と おばあさん の まえに
りょうて を ついて いいました。
aruhi, momotarou wa ojiisan to obaasan no mae ni
ryoute o tsuite iimashita
That day, Momotarou sat with both hands on the floor
in front of the old man and old woman and said,
(dialogue)
ふたり は びっくり して とめましたが、
futari wa pikkuri shite tomemashita ga,
They were surprised and stopped him,
ももたろう は しょうち しません。
momotarou wa shouchi shimasen
but Momotarou won’t listen.

Part 7: Preparation to fight the demons

おばあさん は たべれば ひゃくにんりき の でる
にっぽんいち の きびだんご を つくって くれました。
obaasan wa tabereba hyakuninriki no deru
nipponichi no kibidango o tsukutte kuremashita
The old woman made Japan’s best millet dumplings for him,
which if he eats, will give him a tremendous power (lit:the power of 100
persons).
おじいさん は あたらしい きもの を だし、
ojiisan wa atarashii kimono o dashi
The old man got out a new kimono,
 はた まで つくって くれました。
hata made tsukutte kuremashita
and also made a flag for him.
きりりと はちまき を しめ、
kiririto hachimaki o shime
Like a strong man he tied his headband,
かたな を こし に さしたら、
katana o koshi ni sashitara
when he put the sword at his waist,
つよ そうな わかもの に なりました。
tsuyo souna wakamono ni narimashita
he became like a strong young man.

 おじいさん と おばあさん は なみだ を こらえて いいました。
ojiisan to obaasan wa namida o koraete iimashita

Part 8: The First Ally

むらはずれ まで くる と いぬ が きました。
murahazure made kuru to inu ga kimashita
When he came to the outskirts of village a dog came.
(dialogue)

Part 9: The Second Ally

やま の ほう へ いく と さる が きました。
yama no hou e iku to saru ga kimashita
They went to the mountain and a monkey came.
(dialogue)

Part 10: The Third Ally

やま の おく へ いく と きじ が とんで きました。
yama no oku e iku to kiji ga tonde kimashita
They went deep inside the mountain and a pheasant came flying.
(dialogue)

Part 11: Journey to The Demon Island

ももたろう は いぬ と さる と きじ を ひきつれ、
momotarou wa inu to saru to kiji o hikitsure
Momotarou took the dog and monkey and pheasant along with him,
いよいよ おにがしま へ しゅっぱつ しました。
yoiyo onigashima e shuppatsu shimashita
finally they departed for demon’s island.
山 を こえ、
たに を こえ、
うみ に でる と、

yama o koe,
tani o koe
umi ni deru to,
They went over the mountains,
and over the valleys,
and came out to the sea,
おに の ふね が ありました。
oni no fune ga arimashita
and there was a demon’s boat.
ももたろう たち は ふね に のりこみました。
momotarou tachi wa fune ni norikomimashita
They boarded the boat.
ふね は なみ を けたてて ぐいぐい すすんで いきます。
fune wa nami o ketatete guigui susunde ikimasu
The boat went ahead strongly kicking up waves.
(dialogue)
きじ が さけびました。
kiji ga sakebimashita
The pheasant cried out.

Part 12: Get Ready, Demons!

おにがしま に は おおきな もん が たって いました。
onigashima ni wa ookina mon ga tatte imashita
On demon’s Island there was a big gate standing.
ももたろう が もん を たたきました。
momotarou ga mon o tatakimashita
Momotarou knocked at the gate.
でも、へんじ が ありません。

demo, henji ga arimasen
But, there was no reply.
そこで さる は もん に よじのぼり、
sokode saru wa mon ni yojinobori
Then the monkey climbed up the gate,
なか から かぎ を はずしました。
naka kara kagi o hazushimashita
and from inside he unlocked the key.
(dialogue)
ももたろう は かたな を ぬいて とびこみました。
momotarou wa katana o nuite tobikomimashita
Momotarou pulled out his sword and jumped in.
(dialogue)
ももたろう に おそい かかって きました。
momotarou ni osoi kakatte kimashita
and they attacked Momotarou.
きじ は くちばし で つっつき、
kiji wa kuchibashi de tsuttsuki
The pheasant pecked with his beak,
さる は つめ で ひっかき、
saru wa tsume de hikkake
the monkey scratched with his nails,
いぬ は かみつきました。
inu wa kamitsukimashita
The dog bit.
ももたろう は、 きってきって きりまくりました。

momotarou wa, kittekitte kirimakurimashita
Momotarou continued cutting.
きびだんご を たべて いる ので ひゃくにんりき です。
kibidango o tabete iru node hyakuninriki desu
Because he ate millet dumplings he had a tremendous strength (lit:
power of one hundred people).

Part 13: The Demon's End

とうとう おに ども は いっぴき のこらず やっつけられました。
Tōtō o ni-domo wa ippiki nokorazu yattsuke raremashita.
Finally not one demon remained unbeaten.
(dialogue)
おに の おやぶん は りょうて を ついて あやまりました。
maitta. inochi bakari wa otasuke o
The boss demon put both hands on the ground and apologized.
(dialogue)
yoshi, sorenara tasukete yarou

Part 14: Japan's Number One

ももたろう は たからもの を くるま に つんで
momotarou wa takaramono o kuruma ni tsunde
Momotarou loaded the treasure on the cart
えんやら えんやら むら へ もどって きました。
enyara enyara mura e modotte kimashita
and with great effort went back to the village.
(dialogue)
おじいさん と おばあさん が いったら
ojiisan to obaasan ga ittara

When the old man and old woman said that,
むら の ひと たち も て を たたいて、
mura no hito tachi mo te o tataite
the people of the village the people of the village clapped their hands,
「にっぽんいち の ももたろう。」 と いいました。
nipponichi no momotarou to iimashita
and said “Japan’s number one Momotarou.”
ももたろう は むら の ひと にも たからもの を わけて あげ、
momotarou wa mura no hito nimo takaramono o wakete age
Momotarou also divide the treasure among the people of the village,
おじいさん と おばあさん と さんにん で
ojiisan to obaasan to san nin de
and with the old man and old woman, as three,
いつまでも しあわせ に くらしました。
itsumademo shiawase ni kurashimashita
They lived happily for ever after.
