5 Stages of Artistic Development

1. Scribble Stage | 2-4 years

This is the period when young children are just
figuring out that their movements result in the lines
and scribbles they see on the page. These scribbles
are usually the result of large movements from the
shoulder, with the crayon or marker held in the child's
fist.

2. Pre-Schematic Stage | 4-6 years

The preschematic stage is announced by the
appearance of circular images with lines which seem
to suggest a human or animal figure. During this
stage the schema (the visual idea) is developed. The
drawings show what the child perceives as most
important about the subject.

3.
Schematic Stage | 6-9 years
Artwork created during the schematic stage is used
as a tool for visual communication. Young artists
develop specific schemas to portray objects. Children
still tend to be more interested in the process of
making art rather than the final product at this stage.

4. Transitional Stage | 9-10 years

This is the stage in which the maturing child, usually
9 years or older, attempts to produce art work that
meets adult standards; yet he still produces works
which unintentionally contain many characteristics of
the schematic stage.

5. Realism Stage | 12 years

During this stage, for the first time, the attention has
to be shifted from the importance of the working
process to an increased emphasis on the final
product. The final product becomes more significant
with increasing age.
