Rule 1 : As soon as …..,……. (Convert)


No sooner do/did/does……than….
Or
Hardly do/did/had…….when…….
Example :
As soon as I reached the bus-stop, the bus
left.
No sooner had I reached the bus-stop than the
bus left.
or
Hardly had I reached the bus-stop when the
bus left.
Example :

No sooner had the thief run out of the jail than


the guard fired at him.
As soon as the thief ran out of the jail, the
guard fired at him.

Or
Scarcely had the thief run out of the jail when
the guard fired at him.
Rule 2: ……so…… that…(negative sentence)
too….to…(affirmative sentence)
Example :
The girl was so clever that she could not be
taught.
The girl was too clever to be taught.
Rule 3: If + negative…, ……
Unless….., + positive
(If Not = Unless)

Example :
If he does not study hard, he will
fail.
Unless he studies hard, he will fail.
Rule 4 :

…Not only….. But also……..


Besides (is followed by ing form of verb) and
comma.

Example :
He was not only thrown into jail but also
heavily fined.
Besides being thrown into jail, he was heavily
fined.

Example :

Rule 5 : In spite of + ing form of Verb……,…
Despite + ing form of Verb …., ….
Example :

In spite of being poor, he donated money to


poor.

Despite being poor, he donated money to poor.


Rule 6:
Changing adjective degree of comparision.
Positive degree using….. as… as..
Comparative degree using …..than…
Superlative degree using ….the ….
Ist Example :

No other player is as good as the Sachin


Tendulkar – Positive.
Sachin Tendulkar is better than other players
– Comparative.
Sachin Tendulkar is the best player of all the
players – Superlative

IInd Example :

Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful


monument in India – Superlative.
Very few monuments in India are beautiful
than Taj Mahal - Comparative.
Most monuments in India are not as beautiful
as Taj Mahal – Positive.

Rules 7:
Positive tags – for negative sentences
Negative tags – for positive sentences
Example :
He is rich, isn’t he ?
He isn’t rich, is he ?
Rule 8 :
“in spite of/ despite”, (followed by ing form of
verb) to “though/ although” (followed by noun or
pronoun) .

Example :
In spite of being rich, she is hard
working.
Though she is rich, she is hard
working.
Rule 9 :
Although …., …..
However (followed by adjective or adverb)
…..,……….

Example :

Although he is rich, he is unhappy.

However rich he may be, he is unhappy.


Rule 10:

Only…… (Affirmative sentence)

No one except……. (Negative sentence)

Example :

Only a prince can afford such a luxury

No one except a prince can afford such a


luxury.

Or

She was doubtful whether it was correct.

She was not sure whether it was correct


Rule 11:

Exclamatory to Assertive

How beautiful the moon is !

The moon is very beautiful.

Or

That we were at home again !

We wish that we were at home again.


Rule No 12 :
…..And….
Not only (helping verb)…but also….

Example :
Sita is rich and clever.
Not only is Sita rich but also clever.
