Nowadays, our lives are practically
dependent on the Information Communications
Technology (ICT). Data from t h e
Communications and Information Ministry shows that
Internet users in Indonesia increased from 74 million
people in 2013 to 111 million in 2014. In Indonesia,
Internet burst has been mainly used for accessing social
media. Indonesia ranked third among countries with
the highest number of Facebook users, below the U.S
and India.
The popularity of the Internet and social
media unfortunately has not extended to the
education sector. ICT has not become a backbone of
improving the country’s competitiveness through
education. The Ministry of Education and Culture
recorded that only about 50 percent of the 234,919
primary and secondary schools in Indonesia had
access to the Internet in mid 2014.
Advancement of ICT should ideally be able
to revolutionize education. Technology brings new
sources of learning beyond teachers. Moreover, the
divide between students and subjects is further
narrowed by the availability of educational content
through ICT. A revolution in education is also possible
through ICT as students can learn at the appropriate
speed according to their capacity. Interactive digital
content allows students to pick particular topics that
they want to explore more. In a nutshell, there is a
democratization of the learning process.
Unfortunately, it is still a long road to
revolutionize education in Indonesia through ICT. In
addition to building technology infrastructure across
the country’s island, ICT literacy for teachers, parents
and students is also of importance. Without it, we are
constrained from reaping the full benefits of ICT in
education.

The integration of technology and media can
enhance early childhood practice. Successful
integration of technology, and media into early
childhood programs __ (5) __ the use of resources
such as computers and the Internet in daily classroom
practices. True integration occurs when the use of
technology and media becomes routine and
transparent—when the focus of a child or educator is
on the activity or exploration itself and not on the
technology or media being used. Technology
integration has been successful when the use of
technology and media supports the goals of educators
and programs for children provides children with
digital tools for learning and communicating and
helps improve child outcomes.

possibilities of extending children’s learning through

classroom plan, technology and interactive media

By focusing on technology and interactive

teachers can avoid the passive and potentially harmful
use of non-interactive, linear screen media that is
inappropriate in early childhood settings.
Intentionality is a key to developmentally appropriate
use.
Exciting new resources in today’s technology-
rich world represent the next frontier in digital
learning for our youngest citizens, leaving it to
talented educators and caring adults to determine

how best to leverage each new technology as an
opportunity for children’s learning in ways that are
developmentally appropriate.

A forgotten issue in urbanism is land use during
the night time, with problems such as noise and dirt,
which could be improved with information from
Twitter. At least this is what Enrique and Vanessa Frías-
Martínez believe, computer science researchers at
Telefonica Research and the University of Maryland
(USA) respectively, who have suggested using
geolocalized tweets for urban planning and land use.
Enrique Frías-Martínez explained that geolocalized
tweets can be a very useful source of information for
planning since it is an activity carried out by a large
number of people who provide information on where
they are at a specific time and what they are doing. The
researcher points out that thanks to the increased use
of smartphones, social networks like Twitter and
Facebook have made it possible to access and produce
information ubiquitously.
These networks generate tags with the event’s
geolocation. The new technique “automatically
determines land uses in urban areas by grouping
together geographical regions with similar patterns of
Twitter activity,” says the researcher. Using aggregate
activity of tweets, the Frías-Martínez siblings have
studied land use in Manhattan, Madrid and London.
In the first two cases they identified four uses:
residential, business, daytime leisure (mainly parks
and tourist areas) and nightlife areas. The study has
determined that, in Madrid, night-time tweet activity
is concentrated on weekends and in Manhattan, on
weekdays. On the other hand, London is characterized
by its tweeting activity in daytime leisure areas.

In the twentieth century people depend on
unlimited energy to power their everyday lives. A wide
range of energy-run devices and modern conveniences
are taken for granted, and although it may seem that
we will never be in danger of living without those
conveniences, the fact is that many supplies of energy
are dwindling rapidly. Scientists are constantly
searching for new sources of power to keep modern
society running. Whether future populations will
continue to enjoy the benefits of abundant energy will
depend on the success of this search.
Coal, oil and natural gas supply modern
civilization with most of its power. However, not only
they are supplies of these fuel limited, but they are a
major source of pollution. If the energy demands of the
future are to be met without seriously harming the
environment, existing alternative energy sources must
be improved or further explored and developed. These
include nuclear, water, solar, wind, and geothermal
power, as well as energy from new, nonpolluting types
of fuels. Each of these alternatives, however, has
advantages and disadvantages.

Nuclear power plants efficiently produce large
amounts of electricity without polluting the
atmosphere, however, they are costly to build and
maintain, and they pose the daunting problem of what
to do with nuclear wastes. Hydroelectric power is
inexpensive and environmentally safe, but impractical
for communities located far from moving water.
Harnessing energy from tides and waves has similar
drawbacks. Solar power holds great promise for the
future but methods of collecting and concentrating
sunlight are as yet inefficient, as are methods of
harnessing wind power.
Every source of energy has its disadvantages.
One way to minimize them is to use less energy.
Conservation efforts coupled with renewable energy
resources, such as a combination of solar, water, wind
and geothermal energy and alternative fuels, such as
alcohol and hydrogen, will ensure supplies of clean,
affordable energy for humanities future.
