TITLE: REPAIR OF PIPING, DUCTS AND EQUIPMENT OF FRP MATERIAL

1.0: SCOPE
This work instruction covers the handling and storage of FRP chemicals, repair procedure, health and
safety, waste disposals of FRP piping, ducts and equipment of FRP materials. Special emphasis has
been placed to provide guidelines on health and safety for those personnel who are directly or
indirectly involved in handling of FRP related materials.

2.0: HANDLING AND STORAGE

1. Resin shall be stored in a cool, dry place, and controlled climatic conditions as per their MSDS.
2. All material containers should remain sealed until usage to prevent moisture pickup and other
contaminations. Once the container is opened for use, it must be closed properly after its use to
prevent contaminations.
3. For maximum shelf life, resins, curing agents and additives should be stored at climatic
conditions defined in their MSDS’s.
4. Personnel using the resins shall be familiar with the MSDS and be able to refer to it when
necessary.
5. Glass reinforcement material shall be stored away from water and any other contamination.
6. Store all the containers containing curing agents and additives away from heat, sparks, and open
flames. Storage containers should remain sealed to prevent contamination.
7. Chemical like Hardeners shall be stored away from accelerators and other combustible materials.
8. Special care shall be taken when handling & mixing of accelerators and hardeners together in
working/supplication area.
9. Maintain cleanliness in storage and working areas.

3.0: REPAIR PROCEDURE

3.1 Repair of damaged pipe joint or damaged equipment surface
1. Cut and remove the old/damaged FRP wrapping reinforcement from the damaged area with
grinder.
2. For PP/FRP pipe joint cut & repair weld the PP joint after preparation of bevel at both ends.
Apply PP weld through hot air blower.
3. Make rough the edges and surrounding surface, then apply coat with polyester or vinyl ester
resin.
4. Apply resin paste putty to the repair joint location to fill any gaps and irregularities in the joint.
5. After the curing of putty, grind and make smooth the surface.
6. Apply FRP material with resin as per standard (JACOB’s) procedure defined by the designer.
Apply roller constantly to ensure removal of air and adherence of FRP mats.
7. Preparation of FRP resin solution shall be according to following chemicals composition;

Sr. # Description By Weight By Volume

a. Resin (Vinyl Ester Palatal–A 430S) 1000 gm 98.15 ~ 97.25%
b. Accelerator (NL – 49P) 10 ~ 20 gms approx 01 ~ 02% approx
c. Hardener (MEKP) 3 ~ 6 gm approx 0.6 ~ 0.3% approx
d. Di-methyl Aniline (DMA) 2.5 ~ 4.5 gm approx 0.25~0.45% approx
Total Compound 1018.5 ~ 1027.5 gm 100%

3.2 Repair Procedure for External / Internal Chemical Barrier

1. Remove the damaged barrier by chipping, scratching etc.
2. Apply chemical barrier to above area with a brush, in case of inside repair. For external repair,
polyester resin to be applied.
3. Reinforce this barrier by two layers of wet tissue mat.
3.3 Quality Assurance
1. In visual examination of FRP wrapping / coating, FRP should be free from chips, fractures, edge
segregation, excess / lack of fill out, foreign inclusion, air bubble etc.
2. Curing time after any FRP related repair work is minimum 4 hours, depending upon weather
conditions.

4.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY

1. All personnel working with fiberglass shall have thorough understanding of safety measures
referred in MSDS of all materials that they are using.
2. Smoking, eating, and / or drinking are prohibited while working with or being near fiberglass
materials.
3. Rubber gloves are recommended when working with fiberglass materials to prevent irritation.
4. Good ventilation shall be maintained in all working areas. In confined spaces where ventilation is
poor, respirators shall be used.
5. Safety glasses shall be worn at all times.
6. Under no circumstances shall accelerators be mixed directly with hardeners. Such an event may
cause an explosion.
7. Resins must be stored at temperatures defined in its MSDS. Liquid resin must be treated as a
flammable material.
8. Accelerators must be used with extreme caution as these are active chemicals and will react if
exposed to heat or mixed with other chemicals.
9. Eye protection must be used when working with hardeners such as MEKP.
10. Grinding of fiberglass surfaces will generate dust which can be an irritant to some personnel. For
those who become irritated from exposure to fiberglass dust, the hands, arms, and face should be
washed.

5.0 DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

1. Waste disposals of FRP materials should be strictly carried out in accordance with instructions
given in MSDS of respective chemicals.
2. Empty containers may not be disposed off unless all remaining material adhering to the internal
walls has been removed.
