Grid Connected PV systems

A grid connected PV system is one where

the photovoltaic panels or array are
connected so as to match the
requirements of inverter that converts the
DC power generated by the PV array to
compatible AC energy that can be utilized
in-house and or be exported to utility grid.

Grid Connected Net Metering

If during a sunny day more electricity is produced by the solar PV system then is consumed in-
house, this excess solar power is delivered back to the utility grid. This reflexes into the
bidirectional meter provided by the power supply entity. When this happens it credits the units
by the local power supply entity for the amounts of electricity produced by the grid connected
PV system. The amount of electricity allowed to export to the grid is supervised by the power
supply entity.
During the billing period only the amount of electricity consumed apart from the PV system are
billed for the “net amount” of electricity consumed as it would normally be.

Why Energy Mix

Nepal is at present apparently mostly Hydroelectricity based Economy where major of HP and
IPP’s are based on RoR (run off rivers). This limits energy production during dry season, hence if
any other source being introduced that could help HP store for the peak time i.e. evening time
could adequately solve the problem. Among various renewable Energy Solar PV is one of the
proven technology globally and accepted. Concept of Energy Mix has been accepted currently
worldwide. This could also eliminate the need of long distance transmission as it can be
produced and consumed within the demand periphery and also helps reduce transmission
losses.
Benefits of Solar GT (Grid Tied/Connected) System
Green Energy Prestige
Aids to be contributor in promotion and development of sustainable energy for All (SE4ALL)
initiative, targeting the provision of clean energy to all by 2030 and also be a partner in
Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) calls for “affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern
energy for all” by 2030 to:
 Ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services
 Increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix
 Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency

Power Independence
Solar power has become a sustainable and cost-effective energy alternative for industries with
a fixed-cost solution, with a lifespan of 25-30 years. This results in a lower electricity bills as the
power generated by the solar plant free.

Reduced Operating Costs

Coupled with the fact that solar systems have relatively low maintenance costs. PV solar is
an affordable, accessible, and prevalent energy source that provides organizations the
opportunity to own a power-generating asset.

Increased Energy Resilience

Electricity with a bad quality is dangerous and uneconomical. By generating sustainable
electricity onsite, it can increase the power quality and also control the reactive power.

Renewable energy (benefit of Energy Mix)

Solar power is a 100% clean, renewable energy source that reduces dependence on fossil fuel
electricity production. On the other hand, solar energy produces no pollution. The sun’s
abundant power is an unlimited source of energy that does not harm the ozone layer. Industrial
solar energy systems are an investment in the future of the planet that can help to keep non-
renewable energy sources and protect the environment.

Increase value of energy-efficiency

Installing solar panels on the roofs can increase the property’s value and reduce the need of
cooling due to direct sunlight and also results on the building long term operating expenses.

Reduced carbon emission

Saving the planet and reducing carbon footprints and fossil fuel consumption is more relevant
every day. Unlike fossil fuel, solar panels generate electricity with no air or carbon pollution and
no ash or other waste products. When synchronized with DG it can also reduce the emission
and reduce the fuel consumption.
