A parameter is a number describing a whole population (e.g., population mean), while a statistics is a
number describing a sample (e.g., sample mean). Statistics and parameters are numbers that
summarize any measurable characteristic of a sample or a population.

Population is an entire group that you’re interested in studying and a sample is a smaller group taken
from the population.

The most common parameters in statistical analysis include: Mean, Median, Mode, Standard
Deviation, Variance
Different symbols are used to denote parameters:

1. Just look for mean/average, standard deviation, variance, and proportion of population.
2. Determine the value that pertains to the given parameter, then translate them in symbols for
hypothesis testing.
