I: Basic Security Principles and

Concept
Security and safety are at the second level of the hierarchy of human needs (Maslow,
1984). Both are on top of the physiological needs, followed by air, food, shelter, excretion
among others. The need for security and safety encompasses the body, health, family,
resources and property (Sulpan, 2014).

Security is really a great concern of all the industrial facility or organization in the
world. Security is needed everywhere, at corporate offices especially multinational
companies. Industrial security is a great concern of all developing countries. Increased of
the Industries will give more employment opportunities and ore will be the growth of the
country’s economy. With the rise of terrorism and other criminal acts, security for
industrials facility is a must.

After the need for safety and security is satisfied man developed the need of social
relationship and to belong. These needs do not stop with simple relationship. One needs
also to belong to a more structured organization such as a team. During this stage, the
individual either becomes a member or the leader of a team.

This module aims to provide practical guidelines for the application of the principle
and aspect of security in the daily performance of their roles and in their organization, their
families and their personal lives.

What is Security?

In broadest sense, security provides a predicable environment where one can pursue
his objectives without fear from the occurrence of mishaps and their effects when they
occur.
SECURITY is a means from where “sense of security” is obtained. Security is implied
in one way or the other in other organizational undertakings and concepts such as risk
management, loss prevention and control, business community, corporate good governance
and business intelligence.

Basic Objectives of an Organization

The pursuit of security must be aligned with the objectives of a team such as in an
organization or a business enterprise, a household, and individual or undertaking.

1. Efficiency is simply defined as making the most of one’s resources. All companies, just
like everyone else, endeavors to make the most out of their resources or investment.

The same definition is applied on households and individuals. To the family, the
home is their refuge and there are unwritten house rules that are aimed at conserving
resources, which they need to be able to rest after a day’s work.

The same could also be said of the individuals who have their goals in life. They
endeavor to conserve and stretch their personal resources to their goals.
2. Stability is a team’s ability to withstand the effects of external condition. While
efficiency involves the control of internal conditions, stability is the resiliency of the
organization against threat from the outside of the organizations. Example of external
interventions is the adverse effects of a bad economy of the disaster due to natural causes.

To a family, this objective is about their capability of staying and living together by
supporting each other’s and bonding together thru love, caring and nurturing, regardless of
the trials that come their way such as sickness, disaster or loss of job by the bread winner.

To an individual, the attainment of this objective implies availability of support that can
make one withstand pressures and challenges.

3. Profitability means the degree of which a business or organizations yields a profit.

Profitability is achieved when the value of the team’s output is greater than its input. It
is the main reason for anyone who goes into business in the first place.

To a household or an individual, attainment of these objectives means having

amassed disposable income or resource in excess of its basic needs.

To an individual, this is the savings from his income that will allow him freedom to
enjoy excesses.

4. Growth means the needed and desired performance results to be reached by means
outside the present product and markets.

A team must grow to be able to deliver the needs of an expanding market brought
about by the rise in population and in economy. A team that does not grow will
eventually die.

As its employees advance in their respective profession, so are the needs of their
families. Their family members grow in number, they need to sustain their resources
to support their families.

To an individual, his means the acquisition of more personal assets and social
mobility and widens his areas for opportunities.

5. Sustainability this focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Being sustainable to a family starts when children become responsible and

productive members of society. By growing responsible and productive children, the
family contributes significantly to the society that they are a part of.
