Lesson 1: STATISTICS
Competency: Pose real-life problems that can be solved by Statistics (M7SP-IVa-2), and formulate simple
statistical instruments. (M7SP-IVa-3)
Reference: Learner’s Module – Mathematics 7
Concept Notes:
What is Statistics?
 Statistics refers to the techniques by which data are collected, presented, organized, analyzed,
and interpreted.
 Statistics is an indispensable tool in understanding the rise and fall of an organization; the win
or loss of a competing team; the success or failure of a program; etc. An organization for
instance uses the previous plans and strategies in obtaining its vision and mission. The
strategies employed in an activity yielding successful results can be used again to carry out a
new plan.
Consider the given situation below and see the statistical steps involved

The strengths and weaknesses of a Basketball Team can be seen in the statistical records on file.

A. Collection: Taking a look at its records on file will give a message on how they perform in
each of their game.
B. Presentation: Tabulating the important data like no. of points made; no. of foul moves
made; no. of 3-point score shots can give information on who plays well in the game.
C. Organization: Organizing all this information will provide the basis for a persuasive
presentation.
D. Analysis: Examining more deeply the information presented will provide an understanding
of the characteristics of each player in the team.
E. Interpretation: Giving an opinion to the analysis made to the data presented will make the
interpretation process more plausible and reliable.
TWO (2) TYPES OF STATISTICS
Descriptive Statistics includes the techniques Inferential Statistics is concerned more with
which are concerned with summarizing and generalizing information or making inferences
describing data. about a population.

Statistics has been playing a vital role in our everyday activities.

1. The number of persons living in a household is statistical data.
2. The number of daily text messages sent to WOWOWIN is statistical information.
3. The very recent pandemic problem (Covid-19) which has affected the entire world
likewise suggests statistical data.

IMPORTANCE OF STATISTICS
 Statistics in the early times refer to information about demographics such as population in a
certain state or country. This was later extended to include all collections of information of
all types and still, later, it was extended to the analysis and interpretation of such data.
