Importance of statistics

STATISTICS
Is a science that deals with the methods of
collecting, organizing, summarizing, presenting
and analyzing data in such a way that valid
conclusions can be drawn from them.
THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF HOW
STATISTICS IS USED IN DIFFERENT AREAS.

1. MEDICINE
Statistics is used in medical research,
providing healthcare professionals with new
knowledge and technology for better
diagnosis, treatment, and the prevention of
certain diseases.
2. EDUCATION
The performance ratings of students in
national examinations are monitored for the
improvement of the quality of education.
3. FINANCE
Statistical methods are used to track trends in
financial measures over a certain period of
time.
4. BUSINESS
Statistics is used to test consumers’ preferences
and to discover what it is about a product that
gives it its appeal.
5. ACTUARIAL SCIENCE AND INSURANCE
Probability tables dealing with deaths,
accidents, illness, fires, and industrial losses, as
well as natural disasters, are determined and
used as tools in the computation of premiums.
6. SPORTS
Numerical measures about the performance of individual
players and teams can be calculated using statistical
formulas.
7. POLITICS
Statistics is used to obtain information about voters’
attitudes toward certain issues and candidates.
8. GOVERNMENT
Several statistical data are collected to help in policy –
making process.
AREAS OF STATISTICS
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
Consists of methods concerned with collecting,
organizing, summarizing, and presenting a set of
data so as to yield meaningful information.
Example:
A chart or a table showing the number of students
who graduated from your school from 1990 to 2016.
INFERENTIAL STATISTICS
Comprises methods concerned with making
predictions or inferences about an entire
population, based on the information
provided by a given sample.
Example:
Is a study on the relationship of age at
marriage and divorce.
POPULATION AND SAMPLE
POPULATION
Consists of the totality of all elements or entities
from which you want to obtain your information.
SAMPLE
Is a subset of the population.
Example:
Suppose you have a statistical study on the
percentage of students in National Capital Region
(NCR) who passed the University of the Philippine
College Admission Test (UPCAT). You must have all
the students in the NCR who took the UPCAT as the
elements of your population. One sample can be a
set of 200 students randomly chosen among the
students in the NCR who took the said test.
