Understanding Statistics and Probability

This document provides an introduction to statistics and presents activities related to statistical concepts. It defines statistics as the science of collecting, analyzing, interpreting and presenting empirical data. Statistics draws on mathematics and computation. The activities ask questions about the relevance of statistics, differences between surveys and interviews/qualitative and quantitative research, and identifying examples as qualitative or quantitative. The final activity instructs students to conduct a survey of students in a relationship about their relationship.

What is Statistics?
Statistics is the science concerned with developing and studying methods for collecting,
analyzing, interpreting and presenting empirical data. Statistics is a highly interdisciplinary field;
research in statistics finds applicability in virtually all scientific fields and research questions in
the various scientific fields motivate the development of new statistical methods and theory. In
developing methods and studying the theory that underlies the methods statisticians draw on a
variety of mathematical and computational tools.

ACTIVITY #1. Answer the following qustions below:

1. Why do you think is the relevance of statistics to our lives?

2. Why do you think is the relevance of statistics to our practical research?

3. What is discrete random vairble?

4. What is continious random variable?

ACTIVITY #4. You are going to survey all students that are in a relationship in just one
section you have chosen, its up to you whether the section will come from college or senior high
school stiudents. First you have to identify those who have mutual relationships because they are
your responsdents. Make copies of this survey: REMEMBER that surveying is just giving them the
copies and then they are the responsible to rate. If they are done you may collect it with their name
and signature in paper.
