data.
FUNCTIONS
  OR USES OF STATISTICS

D. Statistics helps in presenting complex data in a

suitable tabular and graphic form for an easy and
clear comprehension of the data.
E. Statistics helps in drawing valid inferences,
along with a measure of their reliability about
the population parameters from the sample
data.
HOW CAN WE GET THE NEEDED DATA?

Statistical Instrument
This is a tool that researchers use to collect needed
data. Examples of instruments are survey
questionnaires. Let us consider how to write a
survey questionnaire.
NOTE: Your survey questionnaire should have the 3
main parts.
HOW CAN WE GET THE NEEDED DATA?

Introduction – This gives the respondent the SURVEY TOPIC (or

what the survey is all about) and what to do with the survey.

Profile of Respondent – This Part I of the survey asks the
respondent certain important personal details. Some of
which can be optional, that is, the respondent is allowed not
to give that particular information such as Name.

HOW CAN WE GET THE NEEDED DATA?

Questions to answer – This Part II is the list of question

items which can be open-ended questions like nos. 1
and 2 or with check boxes like no. 3.

NOTE: The questions should be RELEVANT and should ask
for information that will answer the SURVEY TOPIC, or let
us say,
questions should be coherent to the Survey Topic.
The beekeeper wanted to know if other
beekeepers in Cebu are losing hives.
Determine if the following questions
would help the beekeeper collect the
data to answer his problem.
  Can it help the
  beekeeper answer
his problem?
Questions (Yes/No) Why

1. How many hives does the beekeeper’s

friend have?
2.How many hives do beekeepers in
Cebu have last year?
3. How many hives do beekeepers in
Cebu have this year?
4. What is the difference between
number of hives in Cebu this year and
last year?
5. How many hives do Mang Pablo?

Evaluation:

In your barangay, suppose you are asked

to do a survey on “ Working/Employment
Status of Residents” in your barangay.
Write a survey questionnaire that
includes the 3 parts – Introduction,
Profile, and the 3 questions.
ENRICHMENT

1.Write at least four problems or questions

that can be answered using Statistics
2. Make a survey in your school or in your
community to find out how far students
travel to come to school. Make the best
estimate by using kilometres. Ask at least 40
students.
