Guest Compendium
Welcome to Islington. This hotel is celebrated for its eclectic mix of modern and
traditional architecture, a fine art collection, antique furnishings and relaxed, personal
service. We feel confident that your stay with us will be a relaxing and enjoyable
experience and encourage you to explore our beautiful public rooms and acre of
garden. Please make yourself at home and if we can assist you with any aspect of your
stay at Islington, day trips around Hobart, restaurant bookings or travelling plans
around Tasmania please let one of the lovely front of house team know.
Built in 1847, The Islington is rich with history. An example of Regency architecture,
the house is rather unusual for Hobart where Georgian style homes are more common.
South Hobart, known in the 1840’s as “Holebrook Place”, was an exclusive address
that housed many of Hobart’s most prominent dignitaries. This part of Davey Street is
still known as the dress circle of Hobart and many of the houses along the street,
including Islington, offer some of the city’s best views of Mount Wellington. After
being enjoyed as a family home for many over the years, The Islington was converted
into a hotel in 1986. Since that time the hotel has gone through many transformations
to become the eclectic mix of old and new that it is today. Now an 11-room luxury
urban lodge, The Islington offers 5 star accommodation in either the grandeur of the
original house or in the tranquillity of the modern rooms opening out onto an acre of
gardens.
HOTEL INFORMATION
The Islington experience is designed to make you feel like you are staying in your own
home. Take the time to walk around the hotel and explore the original part of the
house; the Library, Rose and Morning rooms and the Conservatory in the newer wing.
These areas are for you to enjoy anytime during your stay and the house is full of a
vast collection of art and antiques. An Art Guide is available from reception should you
wish to learn more about the provenance of art and antiques on display at Islington.
During the colder months the fires will be lit in the house every day.
Your Room key will also open the front and side doors of the hotel. The gate button
allows you to come and go as you like, simply press the button and the gate will open
for you. The gate will open automatically toward you as you exit the hotel by car. If
you are leaving the hotel on foot you can exit through the side gate, on the right of the
main gate. Guests will incur a $100 charge for a lost room key or gate button.
