Core activity
(-) Lifting crankshaft
Removing crankshaft main bearing caps

Mark both main bearing caps prior to removal to ensure that they
can be reinstalled in their original positions.
Do not mix up the two main bearing caps.
Remove screws (1) and remove both main bearing caps (2).

BMW-Motorrad - 0B54 - F 800 R, K73 12

Move crankshaft (3) up by turning it slightly and insert a suitable

provisional support (arrow) to hold it in the raised position.

(-) Removing timing chain (crankshaft raised)

If you intend re-using timing chain (1), be sure to mark the direction
of rotation on the chain prior to removal.
Lift timing chain (1) off the sprocket and remove.

(-) Removing timing-chain tensioning rail

Remove screw (1).

Work timing chain tensioning rail (2) down to remove.

Checking timing-chain tensioner rail

Check

Measure the depth of the track worn into the timing-chain tensioner
rail.

Technical data
Track depth in Wear limit max 0.8 mm

Result:

Measurement indicates that tracks are too deep.

Measure:

Replace the timing-chain tensioner rail.

(-) Installing timing-chain tensioner rail

Clean the threads.

Insert timing-chain tensioning rail (2) from below.
Install screw (1).

Thread-locking compound (Micro
-encapsulated)

(-) Installing timing chain (crankshaft raised)

Insert new timing chain (1) into the chain cavity and loop it over the
sprocket on the crankshaft.

(-) Lowering crankshaft

Before lowering crankshaft (3), lubricate all bearing seats with

engine oil.
Remove provisional support (arrow).
Carefully ease crankshaft (3) down into position in the bearing
shells.

Clean the mating faces.

Install main bearing caps (2), making sure that the reamed pins
(arrows) are correctly positioned.
Make sure that the marks indicating the correct installed position
match.
Use an electronic torque wrench/angle-of-rotation tightening tool
when tightening.
