1. Introduction

This report aims to bring a definitive vision of my career prospects. The report comprises an
understanding of the marketing profession, in which I aspire to build my career in. It contains
the skill set and knowledge domains I have to excel in, for getting the job once I have
graduated. For the purpose of this report, I have done primary research by contacting a few of
my acquaintances working in the same profession, and for the secondary research, I have
used management journals, and articles to gain an overall perspective regarding the same.

4
2. Analysis and application

Both the primary and secondary research is done to gain comprehensive knowledge about the
marketing profession, and everything it entails. The primary research is done by interviewing
two acquaintances working in the field to get details about the actual working conditions and
various job profiles. For secondary research online publications and research papers were
studied (Sileyew, 2019). This is supplemented by various general articles on the web.
Conclusions are drawn in the context of the job vacancy that is being chosen, for relevance
and applicability.
2.1 Trends impacting the job
Marketing is one profession that changes at a very rapid pace. The processes and systems
become obsolete quickly, and as such prior research of the future trends can assist in
preparing for the cut-throat competition for job vacancies, as well as begin the career on the
right note. The main trends that are likely to impact the profession in the near future are
mainly related to digitalization and social media.
Influencer marketing

Influencers over the internet enjoy tremendous engagement from their followers, that is the
reason many marketing firms are spending heavily on influencer marketing. The return on
investment from collaborating with influencers is great and thus it is likely to be in trend in
the near future (Chopra, Avhad and Jaju, 2021). It is effective in converting leads, forming a
connection with the audience, and raising brand awareness.
Innovative ways of customer service
Many marketing journals have acknowledged the fact that social media can be utilized as a
tool for providing better customer satisfaction and enriching the buying experience (Am et

5
al., 2020). As social media sites are increasingly being used as an e-commerce platform as
well, this is becoming the surest way to interact with customers especially millennials and
Generation Z.
Focus on social responsibility
The modern consumer is very conscious and aware and as such brands and businesses across
the globe are focusing more on creating content on social responsibility, morals, and
transparency (Saha et al., 2020). People view businesses that support social causes and
campaigns to be better and thus this trend of creating content and strategies emphasizing
social responsibility worth the money and hype.
Experimental marketing
Experimental marketing includes the integration of virtual reality for providing stimulating
experiences to customers. Though this requires a high budget expenditure, businesses having
no financial constraints can adopt this marketing technique (Kalaignanam et al., 2021). As
digital and virtual platforms are becoming more reach to a larger audience, marketers may
become inclined to adopt such techniques.
Technological integration
Marketers are increasingly using new-age technologies such as Artificial intelligence and
machine learning for data analysis and evaluation, the use of augmented reality and virtual
reality in advertisements (Kalaignanam et al., 2021). Thus including more and more new
world technologies for better reach and reception of the marketing campaigns.
2.2 Required skills and knowledge set

6
Fig.2 Skills required in the marketing field
Though the profession of marketing has numerous different opportunities available in the job
market requiring specialization, there are a few skills and expertise that most employers look
for in recruiting personnel especially graduates. The data regarding the same is being
obtained mainly from secondary research methods and complemented by a glance at the real
world by primary sources.
Personal skills
Communication skills
It is the most desirable skill that is being asked for in performing any job in the marketing
profession. This is because the tasks mainly involve interaction between the personnel with
the customers, as well as with people within the organization, that is where good
communication skills come to play ( Di, 2019). Marketing jobs are collaborative in nature,
and hence communication is of utmost importance.
Interpersonal skills
Most employers are looking for people having interpersonal skills. As marketing is a team
exercise, businesses need people that can work as part of the team, and in turn are able to
build a robust relationship and interact with customers as well as people inside the
organization (Heanget al., 2019). Having good interpersonal skills can be effective in getting
the client base and maintaining internal harmony in the organization.
Creativity
Marketing is a diverse field and has many job profiles, most of them in search of creative
employees. Be it content creation, digital marketing, or advertising, creativity is needed in
almost every aspect of the job (Chowdhury et al., 2019). This is the reason most of the job
vacancies over the internet specifically ask if the person is creative or not.
Attention to detail
As a marketing professional is asked to work with clients having different requirements, it is
of the essence that the individual in charge has a discerning eye, and is able to observe and
identify specific details that are vital to performing the task at hand most effectively
(Chowdhury et al., 2019). As each marketing strategy has unique factors associated with it, it
is crucial that nothing is missed out.
Customer focus
Each marketing campaign is different on its own, and hence the professional is required to
alter the strategies and plans, based on customer needs and expectations (Chowdhury et al.,
2019). Companies are looking for people that can prioritize customers above all. As it is a
very competitive profession one has to keep the customers satisfied and delighted at all costs.
Areas of expertise
Data Analytics

7
Expertise in data analytics can assist in evaluating the performance of a marketing campaign
(Buhalis, and Volchek, 2021). It can be used to assess consumer-related data that eventually
aids in refining the marketing campaigns.
Digital Marketing
Though the scope of digital marketing is vast (Buhalis, and Volchek, 2021)., any experience
in the field can help individuals in organizing digital marketing campaigns, as it is evident
that digital is ready to take over the way businesses run their marketing processes.
