Advantages and disadvantages of being part of the EU
The EU is a group of 27 European states with different histories, cultures and languages that joined in the 1950s to create a trading bloc. Then it became also a political union with particular institutions and it appeared very strong, steady and powerful on the international level. Being part of the EU can have many advantages. First of all, the main purpose of the EU is to facilitate trade between member states and to make it easier and cheaper to do business, abolishing custom duties on goods that are sold or transported. Furthermore not only merchandise, but also citizens can circulate free. They can live, work, study and travel in any other EU country thanks to the Schengen agreement and this can open up many job opportunities, assuring greater protections for workers. At the same time the EU is working to develop deprived regions and it addresses key global challenges, for instance climate change, migration and financial stability. On the other hand, being part of this political union can bring many disadvantages. The power and the importance of the EU make it very expensive to run and this contributes to more high cost and at the same time money waste that could be better employed. Even if it seems that citizens hold the power and have the final say, it’s maybe not that true: people feel that the power that the EU holds is also increasing because we’re giving it too much control and authority and this could be source of more bureaucracy, which put EU interests ahead of national and citizens ones, sovereignty and loss of identity. Although the EU is addressing key global issues for migration and more balanced free movements of workers, net migration remains a persistent problem: member states are losing control over overcrowding and the amount of EU citizens that come to live and work in their country. The EU has established the Eurozone among its membership to facilitate trade between them but nevertheless a single currency has proved many problems that can cause for instance a easy transfer of a possible crisis to each member of the Eurozone. To sum up we can say that the EU has both a lot of advantages, that can be increased, and disadvantages, that can be decreased for more advantageously quality of life and lifestyle and a better coexistence between the EU and citizens. Personally I think that the institution of the European Union was a very brilliant idea though the cons that in my opinion can be removed or at least edited to become pros by exposing them and discussing to find a solution that benefits firstly people and the member states.
