1.0 Introduction

Reading effectiveness is dependent on rapid and automatic tasks such as word recognition,

retrieval, and application of appropriate world knowledge (Lin, 2008, 2009b). This integrated process can

be honed through extensive exposure to a second language. Texts are acquired through reading.

According to Grabe (2002), most school reading curricular do not provide Learners. sufficient time to

improve their reading abilities. The teachers encourage their students to improve their reading skill out of

the class. Extensive reading (ER) is currently the most widely used method of increasing reading

efficiency. Many studies on ER have been conducted over the last decade, and even in the twenty-first

century, the ER is still being researched.

Research continues to garner attention in both foreign and second language contexts (Bell, 2001;

Camiciottoli, 2001; Jacobs & Powell, 2002; Gallo, 2002). Furthermore, the benefits of the ER program

for first- and second-language learners are well documented, and ER is positively related to literacy

development (Coady, 1997; Day & Bamford, 1998; Krashen, 2001). Specifically, ER effectively leads L2

learners to read fluently (Hill, 1997), automatically recognize sight vocabulary (Day & Bamford, 1998),

reinforce L2 learners' vocabulary (Nation, 1997), wean off excessive dictionary use (Brown, 2000), and

develop positive attitude (Day & Bamford, 2002). There are few studies in the ER literature that focus on

male and female learners' reading performance in an extended reading activity. Reading materials at three

levels of difficulty were used in this study to see if there were any significant differences in male and

female student reading comprehension in an outside reading program.

Developing strong reading skills in junior high is essential for academic success in senior high.

According to research, literacy is a significant predictor of high school graduation and academic success.

Furthermore, students who have difficulty reading and writing are more likely to fall behind in their

studies. Reading comprehension is especially important for high school and college success because it

allows students to think critically, communicate effectively, and adapt to new situations. Parents should

be vigilant in ensuring that their child is developing reading skills at the appropriate rate, and keeping in

touch with a student's teachers is essential in addressing any deficiency or reading problem. Strong

reading skills developed in junior high school are required to understand and evaluate sources while

researching various subjects in high school. In conclusion, strong reading skills developed in junior high

school have a significant impact on academic success in senior high school and higher education

1.1 Background of the study

The most important outcome of formal education is the production of students who could

read and comprehend the texts being read. In a similar vein, stated that in order to make learners.

One of the primary goals of the is to become proficient in reading educational system. Also,

processes. Furthermore, explained that, in addition to a complex process, reading comprehension

is influenced by a variety of factors. Learners who have not mastered reading will face severe

consequences. It was argued that social and economic progress would be difficult if students did

not master reading and comprehension effectively. According to researchers, young learners who

have not achieved proficiency in reading according to their level by grade 4 are more likely to

face academic difficulties in high school and college.

Students who do not master reading will face serious consequences. argued that social

and economic progress will be difficult if students do not master reading and comprehension

effectively. According to researchers, young learners who have not achieved reading proficiency

at their level by grade 4 are more likely to struggle academically in high school and college.

1.2 Research Objectives

We chose to research this topic Since we are well aware that some of the Junior High

school students entering SHS is lacking reading skills, And we want to pay attention to this

because reading is one of the things we usually utilize and especially in schools, and it will have a

tremendous impact on students who are in much need of proper reading skills before entering

SHS. This topic will help teachers have better and more effective ways of teaching and to let

every individual grow and perfect their reading skills and comprehension.

This research will provide any necessary data in order to give teachers and students to

build on the importance of perfecting reading skills and to decrease SHS students who still lacks

in proper reading skills and comprehension. This will importance on prioritizing reading skills

and how this will effectively increase proficiency in reading in SHS students and make learning

much more understandable. This topic will answer on why it is important to have good reading

skills and comprehension before coming to senior high school especially in subjects that require

high reading skill and comprehension.

1.3 Scope and Limitations

The intent of this study is to give students to excel in their reading skills to prepare them

for subjects that require high reading skills and focus more on students with poor skills. This

study focuses on prioritizing reading skills before coming to senior high to test their word

recognition and/or pronunciations to better understand the each individual skill and to progress

them to a successful senior high school. This study covers junior high school students and/or

incoming senior high school students. The study also identifies different problems of students in

regards to the skills and fluency of their reading and in what different ways the students improve

and fully reach their potential.

This study focuses on junior high school and incoming senior high school students,

aiming to identify problems related to their reading skills and fluency. The study also explores

various ways for students to improve and reach their full potential. This study aims to improve

students' reading skills, particularly those who have poor skills, to prepare them for subjects that

require high reading skills in senior high school. The study focuses on testing students' word

recognition and pronunciation to understand each individual skill and progress them towards

success. The study covers both junior high school and incoming senior high school students, and

aims to identify problems and ways to improve students' reading fluency.
