HEAT TRANSFER

Before we discuss heat transfer let us define first HEAT

Heat – is a form of energy that can be transferred from one object to another or even created expense of
the loss of other form of energy.

e.g. NOW IMAGINE IF YOU HAVE A POT FULL OF WATER AND YOU PUT THE POT ON TOP OF THE STOVE,
NOW THE POT BECOMES HOT AND AS THE TIME GOES BY THE WATER BEGAN BOILING, THE STOVE
PRODUCES FIRE AND THE ENERGY FORM IN THE FIRE WAS THEN TRANSFERRED TO THE POT, THAT’S
WHY THE POT BECOMES HOT AND ALSO BECAUSE OF THE THAT ENERGY TRANSFER THE WATER STARTS
TO BOIL THAT PROCESS IS CALLED THE HEAT TRANSFER.

THERE ARE 3 FORMS OF HEAT TRANSFER

CONDUCTION

CONVECTION

RADIATION

WHEN HEATING A POT FULL OF WATER ALL THREE FORMS OF HEAT TRANSFER ARE TAKING PLACE.

Conduction takes place with the transfer of the heat from the stove to the pot.

Convection, the water boils through the process of convection. Convection is the transfer of heat
energy in a fluid. This type of heating is most commonly seen in the kitchen with a boiling liquid.
Radiation, and the heat from the flame radiates in all directions.
But what is conduction? Convection? Radiation?

Conduction – is the process in which the transfer of heat takes place between objects by direct contact.
The key of conduction is direct contact.

e.g. – notice that the pan is in direct contact with the fire, the energy from the pan to the egg is
transferred in a process of conduction, as well as the energy of the pot to the rice. Notice that the egg I
in direct contact with the pan as well as the rice is in direct contact with the pot.

Convection – is the transfer of heat from one place to another by movement of

fluids. Fluid is a phase of matter; all gasses and all liquids are fluids.

Thermal energy - Thermal energy (also called heat energy) is produced when a rise in temperature
causes atoms and molecules to move faster and collide with each other. The energy that comes
from the temperature of the heated substance is called thermal energy.

Convection involves the motion of fluids in current. Wherein the warm molecules
will rise and cold molecules will sink and continuously moving and it is cold the
convection current.

Example of convection current is when we boil water, when we boil a water and
una nga muinit is ang lower part because it is the nearest area that the molecules
could pass its heat energy, if init na ang molecules sa ilalom it will rise musaka
sya, ang cold water molecules naman maoy mopaubos then sya napud ang
muinit, if init na musaka napud hantod tanan nga molecules makadawat ug heat
energy, diya na sya mo BOIL. Convection current causes a circular motion or
paikot.

ug cold air

heat transfer through space– and it is called radiation

is the transfer of heat in the form of waves across empty space or vacuum without any medium
this means that objects doesn’t need to be in direct contact with each other in order for heat to pass or
transfer Example; camp fire – we feel the heat energy from the camp fire even in a distance, and the heat in
air radiation is called radiant energy.

The most common example of heat transfer by radiation can be felt every day, do you know
what it is? It is the sun light. Animals and humans are in need of sun light to keep as warm.
There are also radiations that are difficult to feel compared to the sun because of the lower
differences in the temperature between the source and the object, one example is the radiation
from our mobile phones, we cannot feel it nor see it but the radiation is very dangerous to our
body.

Activity : flash pictures or situations and let them determine what form of heat transfer.

PHET SIMULATION – is a collection of over a hundred of interactive simulations for teaching

and learning science and math. PhET
simulations are developed using the
following design principles: Encourage scientific inquiry. Provide
interactivity. Make the invisible visible. PhET simulations are especially
useful for creating visual representations of hard to grasp concepts in science and math while
making them engaging through student manipulation. It provides a realistic imitation

CONDUCTION:
Hot water has more thermal energy than cold water. Colder
objects' molecules and atoms move more slowly and have less
thermal energy than warmer objects.
CONVECTION :
RADIATION:
SOLAR PANEL
All the energy from the Sun comes via radiation.
MAGNETISM
- Magnetism is the force exerted by magnets, when they attract or repel each other

THE LAW OF ATTRACTION AND

REPULSION
ATTRACTION- The law of attraction states that particles with opposite charges attract each
other.
REPULSION- The law of repulsion states that particles with like charges repel each other.
