Course Description
This is the second English course for students in DPT program. It aims to develop effective communication
and interpersonal skills using clear and appropriate English. This course focuses on developing effective
communication strategies, making oral presentations, understanding intonation patterns and their role in
determining the meaning of a message or text, and how to present information in speech and writing. This is
followed by task-based projects that incorporate all four language skills in order to develop the students’
proficiency in English language. This course uses an experiential and self-reflective approach. It aids students
in the development of personal strengths and self-awareness that contribute to communication skills and
positive relationships with others in daily life and in the workplace. Attention is given to many influences and
factors affecting interaction (self-concept, perception, emotions, listening, verbal and nonverbal messages,
cultural and situational differences, and dealing with conflict).

Learning Objectives

The main objectives of this course are to enable the students:

CLO 1: To describe the communication process; that is, identify and define components of fundamental
approaches to interpersonal, public, and organizational communication that bear on how individuals make
themselves understood and enable them to achieve their purposes through interaction that takes place in
various contexts.

CLO2: To comprehend the difference between verbal and nonverbal communication and its impact on
human communication.

CLO 3: To participate effectively in groups with emphasis on active listening, critical and reflective
thinking, and responding.

CLO 4: To identify important steps in preparing effective oral presentations by incorporating different
strategies for effective delivery.

CLO 5: To understand the importance and application of 7Cs principles in written communication.

CLO 6: To Identify impediments to organizational communication flow and develop solutions on how they

CLO 7: To discuss important steps in preparing effective oral presentations and to communicate complex
information in simple and interesting ways to keep the audience engaged.

CLO 8: To appreciate the importance of assertion in interpersonal communication and be introduced to


some key assertion strategies.

CLO 9: To understand the interpersonal nature of giving feedback, receiving criticism and resolving
conflicts.

CLO 10: To appreciate the importance of group communication in interpersonal communication and be
introduced to some persuasive speaking strategies.
CLO 11: To understand the significance and purpose of conversation and negotiation in business settings
and to select appropriate negotiation techniques.

relationships characterized by open and honest communication and effective conflict resolution.

Teaching Methodology (List methodologies used –example are given below)


This course includes lectures, presentations, and demonstrations that highlight discussion and illustration of methods,
as well as hands-on, practical exercises that provide both a sound base of learning and an opportunity to test and
develop skill. The use of software supports the presentation of the material. Students complete assigned readings,
group projects, and participate in exercises and discussions. Groups of about four students will form teams to work on
the various presentations.

Class Policy:-
 Be on Time
You need to be at class at the assigned time. After 10 minutes past the assigned time, you will be marked
absent.

 Mobile Policy
TURN OFF YOUR MOBILE PHONE! It is unprofessional to be texting or otherwise.

 Email Policy
READ YOUR EMAILS! You are responsible if you miss a deadline because you did not read your email.
Participants should regularly check their university emails accounts regularly and respond accordingly.

 Class Attendance Policy


A minimum of 80% attendance is required for a participant to be eligible to sit in the final examination.
Participants with less than 80% of attendance in a course will be given grade ‘F’ (Fail) and will not be
allowed to take end term exams.

Participants should regularly visit the course contents on Google Classroom, and fully benefit from its
capabilities.

 Harassment Policy
Sexual or any other harassment is prohibited and is constituted as punishable offence. Sexual or any other
harassment of any participant will not be tolerated. All actions categorized as sexual or any other harassment
when done physically or verbally would also be considered as sexual harassment when done using electronic
media such as computers, mobiles, internet, emails etc.

 Use of Unfair Means/Honesty Policy


Any participant found using unfair means or assisting another participant during a class test/quiz, assignments
or examination would be liable to disciplinary action.

 Plagiarism Policy
Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in action by the Discipline Committee.

 Communication of Results
The results of quizzes, midterms and assignments are communicated to the participants during the semester
and answer books are returned to them. It is the responsibility of the course instructor to keep the participants
informed about his/her progress during the semester. The course instructor will inform a participant at least
one week before the final examination related to his or her performance in the course.

COURSE PROJECT

1. INTRODUCTION:

This project would assist students to gain information about English Communication, information of communication and the way it may be
made innovative for managers. They would learn about different kind of communication within organizations or business entities. Students
could learn about the significance of English communication in Pakistan, and its impact in the marketplace.

5. PRESENTATIONS:

1. 10-15-minute, PowerPoint presentations by each group. 15 minutes of uninterrupted presentation + 5 minutes for Q&A.
2. Each member of the group to present. Consider equal time allocation across presenters.
3. Presentation slides must include:

Few tips for making presentation:

1. The background shouldn’t be so busy that it attracts attention to itself and away from the slide’s content.
2. Background color should contrast highly with the text color.
3. The text should be big enough to be read by a person with mediocre eyesight at the back of the room. Even chart labels should be
readable
4. There should not be so much text on a slide so that your audience is reading while you’re talking.
5. Put one point or idea on one slide.
6. All the text on a chart should be readable.
7. Irrelevant content would be marked negatively.

Few tips for delivering presentation:

1. Dress Code: Male should wear dress shirt, tie and pant (blazer will be appreciated). Female should avoid wearing jeans and heavy
jewelry.
2. Body Language: Should have a confident eye contact with the audience, appropriate use of hand gestures (avoid putting hands in
pocket), use the floor to move on the stage but without losing eye contact with audience (avoid leaning with the rostrum)
3. Delivery: Use English as a medium to communicate, voice should be audible to the audience sitting at the back, consider taking
pauses while speaking, explain the slides and avoid reading slides (slide reading is strictly discouraged).
