HISTORY IS WRITTEN BY THE WINNERS, ONLY TO FIT NARRATIVES.

In the
eyes of many, it is the Marcos family who are in the wrong; the ones who took advantage of the
presidential power while the people who led the revolution are right. However, how reliable
could this information be if it is stated only from the side of those who are in favor of the
revolution?

Maid in Malacanang is a ten-chapter movie mirroring the last 72 hours. It offers a look on
another side of what has been known to us- a side which may have been twisted by the
opposition to create a façade. Through the movie, it was revealed that the Marcoses- contrary to
what they have been portrayed as, are also humans who get hurt and worn out. The EDSA
Revolution led by the “Katipuneros” or the “Dilawans” was the last straw for the family. Not
even the strong and brave former president Ferdinand E. Marcos was able to endure. Perhaps he
grew weary as the country- the citizens he firmly stood his ground for, are the ones trying to
bring him to his demise. And to make things worse, the family who was supposed to be going
home to Ilocos were brought to Hawaii to make it look like they were running. A contradictory
was however portrayed in the move showing Cory Aquino as the mastermind behind the family
arriving in Hawaii.

Regardless of the Marcos family being labelled as ruthless and their patriarch to be a
cruel dictator, the movie showed them to be people respected by those who have been witnesses
to how they lived behind the glorious image of a presidential family. Their security guards and
maids treasured them and were especially emotional when the family decided to leave. It was
also Imee Marcos who thought of a way for their aids to survive if they were to be seen by the
revolutionists. Although the one who nearly caused the Marcos family’s death was an aid, it was
not a hindrance for Imee to guide the remaining ones to survival.

The statements I have mentioned above will probably sound so biased to some who may
read, but by watching the movie it would be a shame not to ponder on the truth of our history. No
one can really tell what exactly happened in the last 72 hours as every person's perception of an
event that took place in the past has its own version. Hence, it is hard to judge which is right and
which is wrong because there is always a distortion. The lesson is that there is no absolute right
or wrong - what's right for you may not be right for others.
