The story behind a photo
Every week we yêu cầu readers gửi tới a favorite photo, together with một đoạn mô tả ngắn of why
the photo is quan trọng to them. This week’s winner is Dominic, một nhà thiết kế đồ họa from
London.
One of my favorite photos is of a man đang nấu món cá.
I đã chụp bức ảnh in the summer of 1994 when I was đi nghỉ in Africa.
We were in Zanzibar, and we were sailing quanh các hòn đảo. We đã bắt được some fish, and
then landed lên một trong những hòn đảo, and our guide đã đốt lửa and đã nấu the fish.
Richie, the guide, was một người tuyệt vời – he đã trở thành a good friend. He was also một đầu
bếp tuyệt vời. I không thể nhớ chính xác what fish he was cooking trong bức ảnh, but it có vị ngon!
I keep this photo trên tường in my studio. On một ngày mưa, ảm đạm in London, I chỉ cần nhìn vào

By plane or by train?
There are hai cách chủ yếu to travel from Sydney to Perth: bằng máy bay or bằng tàu hoả. It’s một
quãng đường 2700 dặm, so flying is dễ dàng hơn nhiều than đi bằng tàu hoả.
Đi máy bay with the Australian airline Qantas mất bốn tiếng. The Indian Pacific train mất ba đêm.
So flying is nhanh hơn nhiều! Một vé máy bay một chiều Sydney-Perth is $275 but the train is
$680. So flying is also rẻ hơn nhiều. The flights are also thường xuyên hơn than the train: there are
các chuyến bay every day but there are only two trains a week. So, why đi bằng tàu hoả?
Mặc dù the Indian Pacific is chậm hơn than the plane, the train is tốt hơn nhiều for the môi trường.
It is also một cuộc hành trình thú vị hơn across Australia. You có thể nhìn thấy the Blue Mountains,
the Outback, and the Nullabor Plain. And rõ ràng the train is lớn hơn so you can đi lại xung quanh,
go to the restaurant car, and meet nhiều người hơn. It’s một trải nghiệm tuyệt vời. I went bằng tàu
hoả in 2006, and I không thể nhớ được a journey when I was hạnh phúc hơn.

Holiday? I’m too busy
Một cuộc khảo sát gần đây shows that US workers đang đi nghỉ ít hơn this year and đang làm việc
nhiều hơn than before. Trên thực tế, 40% of US workers không đi nghỉ mát at all this summer.
People cũng đang có shorter holidays hơn trước. Most employees now chỉ đi xa for seven days at
a time. Với nhiều người in the US, một kỳ nghỉ 2 tuần is a dream.
Vậy tại sao are những người lao động not going on holiday? There are nhiều nguyên nhân. In one
British survey, một phần ba người lao động said they were quá bận rộn to take a holiday, trong khi
one in five said that they đã quên mất.
In the USA, the situation đang trở nên nghiêm trọng and companies đang khuyến khích their
employees rời khỏi the office more. At Price Waterhouse Coopers, the company sends những tin
nhắn thư điện tử to workers who không đi nghỉ. The messages tell them sử dụng their holiday time.
These companies biết rằng workers đang huỷ hoại their health vì they do not take holidays. And in
the end, many of những nhân viên làm việc quá sức này have to take time off – as nghỉ phép do
ốm.

Great escapes
Are you chán ngấy với the same old vacation? If you are, you nên trải nghiệm thử a new kind of
holiday and dành thời gian nghỉ ngơi của bạn in prison: a prison được biến đổi into a hotel. It nghe
49
có vẻ kỳ lạ, but in the world of tourism, businesses cần phải sáng tạo. Today we look at hai khách
sạn rất khác lạ.
Malmaison
Malmaison in Oxford, UK opened một khách sạn sang trọng in nhà tù cũ của thành phố in 2006.
The main hall, stairs, and the doors are tất cả đều giống như the old prison. The hotel rooms,
which were những xà lim nhà tù cũ, are now những căn phòng đẹp, hiện đại.
However, at Malmaison you không nhất thiết phải ở lại in a converted cell. You can also dành một
đêm in the governor’s house với một chiếc giường sang trọng, an enormous bath, and its own
mini-cinema. But this is căn phòng đắt nhất.
If you muốn nhìn thấy the original cells, you should ask ở quầy tiếp tân – there are two rooms in
the hotel that are vẫn ở trong tình trạng ban đầu. But you can’t stay in these rooms, you chỉ có thể
ngắm nhìn them.
Hostel Celica
You don’t have to chi nhiều tiền to stay in a prison hotel. Hostel Celica in Ljubljana, Slovenia, was
once một nhà tù quân sự and now it is một nhà trọ dành cho du khách trẻ. You can stay in một căn
phòng riêng or một căn hộ dành cho 7 người. All the apartments mới được trang trí in a stylish,
modern way.
But ở nhà trọ này, you can’t escape the hotel’s history. Các vị khách can see graffiti trên các bức
tường nhà tù, and the windows and doors những cái mà có các chấn song. You cũng sẽ phải bỏ all
the sheets ra khỏi giường của bạn when you leave!
Để giải trí, the hotel has music concerts and các buổi triển lãm nghệ thuật. It is also right in trung
tâm thành phố if you muốn chạy trốn tới Ljubljana’s shops and restaurants. And hãy nhớ: you
không nên để money or các vật có giá trị in your room. You don’t know ai có thể ở in the hotel…

Hai người đi bộ đường dài founded The North Face in San Francisco in 1966. They chose tên
công ty because the ‘north face’ của một ngọn núi is khó nhất to climb. Ba năm sau, the company
đã bắt đầu thiết kế its own brand of những bộ trang phục và thiết bị leo núi, and in the 1980s the
company đã bắt đầu sản xuất ski wear.
By 1989, The North Face đã đưa ra a collection of trang phục ngoài trời, ski wear, những chiếc túi

climbers, những người du lịch bụi, and people who enjoy hoạt động ngoài trời. In spring 1999, it
launched loại sản phẩm của riêng nó of trekking and running shoes.
