Application Perfume
Perfume is thousands of years old. One of the oldest uses of perfumes comes from the burning of
incense and aromatic herbs used in religious services, often the aromatic gums, frankincense and myrrh,
gathered from trees. The Egyptians were the first to incorporate perfume into their culture followed by the
ancient Chinese, Hindus, Israelites, Carthaginians, Arabs, Greeks, and Romans. The earliest use of
perfume bottles is Egyptian and dates to around 1000 BC. The Egyptians invented glass, and perfume
bottles were one of the first common uses for glass.
The word perfume comes from the Latin phrase, "per" meaning "through" and "fumus" meaning smoke."
The French later gave the name parfum to the pleasant smells that drift through the air from burning
incense. There are few periods of history that have not been influenced by perfume. The history of
perfume is often intertwined with the history of the human race. One example is the Roman history. The
Roman public baths were spectacular, and the baths of the Emperor Caracalla were the most famous.
One room, called the "unctuarium," had shelves with pots of unguents, jars of fragrant oils, and essences
in bottles of varying size. The Romans indulged in the practice of applying perfume three times a day. Pet
dogs and horses were also perfumed. At feasts, birds were released from their cages to dispense
perfume from their wings; draperies, candlesticks, tables, and cushions were all perfumed. The servants
wore musk, marjoram, spikenard, and other aromatics. Adapted from website:perfumes.com/eng/history.htm

The normal superlative form of old is oldest but we can also find eldest for brothers and sisters:

Application The case of the Missing Ring
Cynthia Hummingbird is a wealthy widow. She lives in a mansion with three wings. She has one wing
to herself. Another wing is for her son’s family of four. Her son Ralph is married to Lila. They have full-
grown twins, Emma and Oliver. The twins still live at home. Emma is engaged to a man named Paul.
The third wing in the masion is for hired help. This includes a gardener, a chef, and a
housekeeper.Besides these wings, there are several common areas in Cynthia’s house, including a
computer room, a kitchen, and a living room with a giant flat screen TV.
Hummingbird Manor was recently robbed. A ruby ring was snatched from the widow’s bedroom. The
ring is a family treasure that was supposed to be passed on to Emma on her wedding day.It was a gift
to Cynthia from her late husband.
The robber had bad timing. Emma and Paul are supposed to be getting hitched next week in the rose
garden. The newlyweds are scheduled to move into the guest house after the wedding.
Cynthia hired the best of the best to conduct the investigation. Detective Bossley starred in a recent
reality show. It was a murder mystery series. Filming for the show took him all over the world. The
Hummingbird watched every minute of it. Now that the series is over, the famous detective is out of a
job.Since there were no signs of a break-in, the detective thinks that a resident of the mansion stole the
ring. He will question each suspect in a private interview. Cynthia has insisted on taping each interview
with a hidden camera. She has made Detective Bossley an offer he can’t refuse.

• In the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens.
• In the second year of marriage, the woman speaks and the man listens.
• In the third year, they both speak and the neighbors listen.
Here's another joke about marriage.

The next day he received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing: "You can have mine."
Now let's listen to a couple of riddles about marriage.
Here's the first one.
Q: Why are men with pierced ears better suited for marriage?
A: Because they have suffered and bought jewelry.
Here's another riddle.
Q: What are the 3 important rings in life?
A: Engagement ring, wedding ring, and suffering.
I'll end with a humorous proverb-like saying.
Love is one long sweet dream, and marriage is the alarm clock.

Application Barbie doll

The Barbie doll was created by Ruth Handler for the Mattel Company in 1959. Handler and her husband,
Elliot, founded the company with partner Harold "Matt" Matson in 1942. Ruth, inspired by dolls she'd seen
on a trip to Europe, and from watching her own daughter, Barbara, created an adult doll for children. Twelve
inches high and plastic, the new "Barbie" doll and her fashionable and separately-sold clothing were such a
hit that Mattel became a publicly-owned company in 1960.
New versions of the toy mirrored fashion trends over the years, and Barbie was the center of a universe
that included a benign boyfriend (Ken), occasional siblings (Skipper, Todd, Stacie, et al), pets (too many to
name, including dogs, horses, cats and a parrot), cars, boats, planes and houses. Mattel designed a wedding
dress for Barbie. After they designed the wedding dress, they designed Ken, Barbie`s boyfriend Ken was
named after Ruth and Elliot Handler’s son, Ken Handler.
Special versions of Barbie included scientists, disco dancers, fashion models, astronauts, rock stars and
lifeguards. By the 1980s the doll's force as a collectible was such that Mattel began making versions of
Barbie specifically for the collectors' market. Critics of the doll say it presents an unrealistic body image for
girls, pointing to Barbie's large bosom, slim waist, long legs, white skin and blonde tresses.
Fans say Barbie encourages young girls -- and boys -- by giving them aspirations to be scientists, disco
dancers, fashion models, astronauts, rock stars or lifeguards. Despite the ongoing debate over Barbie's
impact on the American culture, the doll remains one of the best-known and best-selling dolls on the
market.Retired from http://www.infoplease.com/biography/var/barbie.html#ixzz1rwZGDxgp

Application Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are normally the last teeth to appear. This usually happens when people are in their late teen
years or early twenties -- in other words, when they are older and wiser.Wisdom teeth are molars, or chewing
teeth, at the back of the mouth. The third sets of molars, if you have them, are your wisdom teeth.
They can grow into place normally and never cause a problem. But often there is not enough room for them
in the mouth. They might crowd other teeth. Sometimes they even push sideways through the gums.
An impacted wisdom tooth is one that fails to completely rise through the gums -- the term is erupt. Wisdom
teeth that only partially erupt can leave space for bacteria to enter around the tooth. Infection is a risk in
these cases. Wisdom teeth that are not well aligned and become impacted are often removed.
People should have the placement of their wisdom teeth examined between the ages of sixteen and twenty.
X-rays can show wisdom teeth that are below the gums.
The American Dental Association says removal is generally advised when wisdom teeth only partly break
through the gums. Removal is also advised if there is a chance that poorly aligned wisdom teeth will damage
other teeth. And removal is called for in cases where fluid collects around a wisdom tooth that is partly or
fully below the gum.
The removal of wisdom teeth is performed by oral surgeons. They say if removal is advised, the best time
to do it is before the teeth cause any problems or pain.
But why do we have wisdom teeth if we often need to get them removed? One theory has to do with our
diets. Scientists say the diet of prehistoric humans probably required more chewing teeth. Life was probably
a little rougher on the teeth back then, too. So it was good to have extras.

Last summer our summer house was painted by me. The job took about two weeks. First,

exterior could be painted. A latex paint was used because it is easy to apply and cleans

careful to apply the paint evenly because I did not want to have to apply two coats. A

color was used that was very close to the original color. Our house is a two-story house,

which meant that a tall ladder was needed to do the second story. The paint can had to
