Master of English Linguistics

To begin with, I specifically remember the first time I heard about English Linguistics, and it
immediately got me wondering how it can be important, or what aspects of English it covers.
Years have passed, and I am still enthusiastic toward how English Linguistics has an impact on
our daily lives. The father of linguistics, Ferdinand De Saussure quotes that “Without language,
thought is a vague, uncharted nebula.”  Therefore, that is why I have decided to study Master of
English Linguistics, at Tubingen University.

The University of Tubingen, provides an opportunity to combine the results of both, empirical
researches, and theoretical modeling in English Linguistic field which is a worldwide, well-known
method used in Tubingen University. Even though, the main focus is on the description and
processing of the English language, the program offers specializations in second language
acquisition, information structure, experimental syntax, formal semantics, psycholinguistics, and
historical linguistics, as well as, areas of phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
Furthermore, The Tubingen University Linguistics have been able to receive research funding
over the last 20 years that proves how crucial the University has been in making progress for
English Linguistics happen. Also, a significant matter of Tubingen University, and the program it
presents is that, students are motivated to work independently, and do the whole research
project on their own which is supervised by the University`s staff. In this way, students are more
intrigued to do their assignments, and due to the empirical research process, students will learn
how to get a research done, and be prepared for additional Linguistics studies.

A successful English Linguist will need Analytical Skills, Research Skills, and Communication
Skills which is the ability to deal with complexities of meaning and social uses of English
language, etc... Based on my Academic background, and my job`s tasks, I strongly believe, I
possess all the essential characteristics that would make me a great candidate for Master of
English Linguistics. To illustrate my point, I would like to mention Katharina Reiss who was a
German linguist. She made critical changes in her field, and broached the Skopos theory that
made staple key factors for contemporary studies. Her very first University degree was in
English Translation, and she taught it before becoming a Linguistic, just like me. Having the
same background as one of the most well-known Linguists in the world, makes me feel qualified
enough, to step on her path, and expand both my field of education, and career. During my
Association degree, and Bachelor degree, I had to study many English Linguistics theories that
influenced the translation process, and made the understanding of the English language enrich.
All of these English Linguistics scholars, made me realize, how interested I am in English
Linguistics, and learning facets of English language structure that are not taught in a proper way
in Iran.
Working as an English translator, and studying English translation at university, challenged me
with different kinds of texts, and topics. I had to learn the roots, and origins of words, and study
how languages have exchanged words with each other within time. Learning about Phonetics
and Dialectology in my Bachelor courses, provided a chance for me to become familiar with
English Linguistics every day. Thus, I think it is safe for me to say, I have the primarily
knowledge that is required to sit in an English Linguistic classroom. On the other hand, being an
English teacher, made me go through the actual English Linguistics process. Moreover
linguistics is the study of languages, and it is utilized by teachers, in order to teach the structure
and meaning of speech, and of English languages as well as an understanding of the context in
which certain words are used. When teaching English language, linguistics is important to the
teacher, by providing historical context to word origins, the teacher can help students to have a
better understanding of English language. This is especially important when it comes to
comprehending the differences among conversational speech, formal speech, and abstract
rules about word usage in English language. Consequently, I have always been involved with
various branches of English Linguistics, and now is the time to continue it academically.

Also, an English Linguist should be fluent in English, and my TOEFL IBT score proves that. I got
a total score of 103 out of 120, with great scores in each individual four skills of English.
Although, the courses are taught completely in English, and the university does not require
proof of any other languages, I have been learning German for the past two months, to be able
to enhance my comprehension of English Linguistics, and contribute my progress of success as
a student of Master of English Linguistics. German is among the ten most commonly spoken
languages in the world, and is the most widely spoken native language in Europe. So far, I have
noticed many words, and grammars being shared in these two languages. My program might
not need German or any other languages, but as a Linguist, having knowledge of more than one
foreign language, and my own mother tongue, will help me to focus on divers aspects of
Linguistics, and have my researches done, in a more convenient, and detailed way. This shows
how determined I am about continuing my education by Master of English Linguistics.

As I cited English Linguistics is not taught well in Iran, and, as a matter of fact, we do not have
the English Linguistics program in Iran`s Universities. While, the fundamental need of English
Linguistics is unavoidable. The absence of it prevents students to learn English as they are
supposed to, and they lack the necessary knowledge of how English has developed through
time, to be used as it is today. Finishing my Master of English Linguistics at Tubingen
University will provide a possibility for me, to make serious changes, as Katharina Reiss did in
her time. My attitude toward fixing this problem in my country will always trigger a feeling in me
that, it is my responsibility to make changes happen. And like the first female who won the
Nobel Prize, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, who works at Tubingen University, I am looking
forward to follow my dreams, and achieve my goals, as an English Linguist, to inspire the
women of my country to go after what they want, and work hard for it.
To conclude, with having Tubingen University, and its unique teaching, and researching
methods, I will be at the best place possible to improve my current skills, and experience
learning new facets of English that I have never learned before. Hence, I will have a golden
chance to make major changes about English Linguistics understanding in my country, or even
bring new theories, and debates about how English language has been converted ever since it
was used.
