Report: Study of natural convection with ANSYS Fluent
1: PT Title
Study of mixed convection with a moving wall in a square cavity with ANSYS Fluent.

2: PT Objective
The purpose of this TP is to study mixed convection with a moving wall in a square cavity using ANSYS
Fluent software. We seek to understand fluid behaviour in response to temperature differences, observe
fluid movements, and measure fluid speed and temperature.

3: Assumptions used
We assume that mix convection with moving wall occurs when the fluid is heated, resulting in a
decrease in its density. We also assume that the shape of the square cavity influences fluid movements
and that temperature differences have an impact on fluid speeds and temperatures. To verify these
assumptions, we will need a computer with ANSYS Fluent software.

4: Equipment List
A computer with ANSYS Fluent software.

5: Experience Map
We created a digital model of a square cavity filled with fluid using ANSYS Fluent. We set temperatures
on the walls of the cavity and let the fluid behave according to the laws of physics. We followed the
following steps:

-First we open on sis and we select 2D then double precision and we enter our mesh.

-We then we go to energy and set it to on then we go to viscous and set it to laminar.

-We set the gravity to - 0.00003957991[m/s²]

-Go to fluid and we selected air then we enter the properties that we need.

-We select boundary condition wall and then we select the lower cavity, double click and select
thermal,we entered the temperature then we select momentum and select Moving Wall then we enter
the speed of the Moving Wall.

-We is Select residual and the we enter the data that we need.

-We select run calculation and then we set the number of iterations to 1000 . then we repeat the
process with changing a few settings and we get this next step experience map:
Figure 1: experience map

-Then we select contour with following steps: Results - Graphics -Countour - Temperature -
Save&display and we get the following contours:

Figure 3: contour 1 Figure 2: contour 2

-For velocity countour:Results - Graphics -Countour - Velocity - Save&display and we get the following
contours:

Figure 5: contour 3 Figure 4: contour 4

6: Observation and Interpretation

We observed that the hot fluid rises to the top of the cavity and cools on contact with the cold walls,
before descending to the bottom of the cavity. we also observed that's the difference wall speed
movements have a significant impact on the fluid movement. Fluid speeds and temperatures vary
depending on the conditions at the defined limits. These results confirm our assumptions.

7: Conclusion
In conclusion, we were able to study mixed convection with a moving wall in a square cavity using the
ANSYS Fluent software. We were able to observe fluid movements in response to temperature
differences and measure fluid speeds and temperatures. These results confirm our initial assumptions
and allow us to better understand the behaviour of natural convection.
