LEVEL OF READINESS OF DRRM OF THE MURCIA WATER DISTRICT IN

ADDRESSING CALAMITIES

Rationale

The world at present is experiencing increased exposure to risks and hazards of both

climate-related and human- made disasters that pose a threat to lives and sustainable

development efforts. This needs serious attention so disaster capacity and mitigation efforts

can be formulated to reduce population exposure and vulnerability in international and local

settings. Disasters are inevitable, but their scope and magnitude are often magnified due to

unsustainable development that has not taken into account the possible hazard impacts in a

particular location. Water crises and climate change are Murcia Water District’s societal

and economic risks. Disaster as a whole has the ability to kill people and the business of

selling water as well. Several earthquakes have been adversely affected water sources and

have caused damage to pipelines, reservoirs and pump houses. The February 2012

earthquake partially damaged the water system of the Murcia Water District. The operation

was suspended because the water sources were damaged. The effects of such can be

minimized if the population has a better understanding of locally-experienced hazards and

implements corresponding preventive or mitigating measures. A report from the Asian

Disaster Reduction Center (2002) states that Asia has been suffering from about 38 percent

of the major natural disasters of the world. The Asian region accounts for 57 percent of

people killed and 88 percent of the people affected by natural disasters. Southeast Asia is

exposed to all types of hazards and has been coping with their effects for hundreds of years.

In its Annual Disaster Statistical Review for 2012, the Centre for Research on the

Epidemiology of Disasters ranked the Philippines third worldwide in terms of the number

of reported natural disaster events and first in the number of disaster-related mortality in

2011.

LEVEL OF GENDER SENSITITY AWARENESS AMONG MURCIA

WATER DISTRICT EMPLOYEES IN ADDRESSING INDIVIDUAL

DIFFERENCES

Rationale

Gender sensitivity awareness nowadays is being considered and recognized the impact of

gender aspects in the interaction between people and the society which creates the

significant effects on the social and moral status of a person. The gender sensitivity

showcases the identity of the man’s behavior by understanding and accepting the multiple

differences between men and women. Therefor it is a way of thinking that fosters the

respect and compassion for others regardless of individual differences.

Peter T. Grauer, Chairman of Blooberg Company. Stated that “companies that provide an

inclusive environment supporting work life balance and flexible work arrangements will

eventually succeed in retaining a talented workforce and gain a competitive advantage in

a business environment that has been significantly altered, possibly forever.” Through this,

the gender sensitivity awareness among workers on their work place embraced the benefits

of showcasing the company’s commitment to gender equality and transparency, improve

company’s reporting by aligning with an internationally accepted disclosure standard and

by benchmarking the policies and performances against peers.

In the previous survey conducted by Philippine statistics Authority (PSA) dated October,

2013 with the data shows of 38.5 million employed persons in the country in October 2013.

Of the total employed, 57.6 percent or 22.2 million were wage and salary workers.

8.3 million or 37.5 percent were women while 13.9 million or 62.5 percent were men.

These findings are based on the October 2013 Labor Force Survey.
Through this, the researcher will conduct a study to measure the level of gender sensitivity

EFFECTS OF COVID 19 PANDEMIC IN THE MENTAL HEALTH OF

MURCIA WATER DISTRICT EMPLOYEES

Rationale

The World Health Organization (WHO) declares that health is a state of complete

physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Mental health is one of the important aspects of holistic health development of a person to

function effectively on a daily basis. It technically also refers to a person’s condition with

regards to their psychological, social and emotional well-being. It is essential to always

consider the wellness of our mental health because it helps determine how we handle stress,

relate to others and make choices.

During the upsurge of COVID-19 pandemic, concerns about mental health have

grown. It affected many people’s mental health and created new barriers for people

already suffering from mental illness and substance use disorders. In January 2021, 41 %

of adults reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder (Nirmita Panchal, et al)

Moreover, essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic such as health care

providers, grocery store employees and government employees have shown high rates of

poor mental health outcomes. These workers are generally required outside of their home

and may be unable to practice social distancing. Consequently, they are at increased risk

of contracting coronavirus and exposing other members of their household. These

factors may contribute to poor mental health outcomes for these workers.

In order to measure the effects of COVID-19 pandemic in the mental health of the

Murcia Water District Employees, this study is conducted. Through this, the researchers
can determine the status of the participants’ mental health and can then make necessary

recommendations to address the gap.
