Adelaide 2040

Problem 1: Urban Heat Islands

Design Challenge 1: Redesign a section of Adelaide to increase the green space by 30%
Students will be allocated one of the eight sections below to complete this learning activity. Sudents will use the dmensions given and the information
regarding green space. Student will then have to claculate the increase in green space. Once they have calculated the area in green space required, they then
need to investigate how they are going to make that increase using a range of shapes.
Part 1
Calculate the new green space area of your section by increasing the green space area by 30%. Find the new green
space area using two different methods. Show your working out and explain in words each method and reasoning.
Show your answers in both metres and kilometres squared (Use the space provided)
First, I found out the area of area 1 by multiplying the base by the height, this was a handy number for later. Next I
multiplied the green space by 1.3 which left me with 130,000, I took 100,000 (the original green space)
which gave me 3,000m2 or 30km2.

Part 2
You now need to design some green space areas to add to your section. You will need to determine the
dimensions of these shapes, so the total area adds up to the 30% increased green space area of your section.
Choose one of the options below: (Please use the space provided)

Part 3:
Using the shapes from Part 2, you need to put those shapes on the map in the locations you have allocated. These
shapes need to be put on the map to scale. Use the scale marker on the map as a guide for shape size. (Insert the
section of your map with your new green space area shapes here.) Making sure your shapes are to scale.

Part 4
Justify the locations of your new green space locations. Why have you decided to put the new green spaces where
you have? Have you thought about, houses, roads and the locations of current green spaces?

In area 1 there is housing but it is not vertical, so I got rid of it and put vertical housing around shapes 2,3 and 4.
The area around 2, 3 and 4 were not vertical housing so I knocked that down put a park in the middle and vertical
housing around it to accommodate for the loss of the other house’s. In area 5 and 6 the ground around was dry
land but I only used a little bit of it because it is private land so that the government doesn’t need to buy much, in
total I got 31,250% added greenspace which leaves this area 34,7% green space.
