LESSON 7:

MAINTAINING
TOOLS AND
EQUIPMENT (MTE)
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING
COMPETENCIES (MELCs)
• The learners demonstrate an
understanding of the underlying principles
in the maintenance of furniture-making
tools and equipment.
LO 2. Perform Basic Preventive
Maintenance.
2.1 Identify appropriate lubricants
according to types of equipment.
Introduction
In this lesson you will learn
the different types of
lubricants and the
procedures in lubricating
tools and equipment.
A lubricant is a substance (often liquid)
introduced between two moving surfaces to
reduce friction and wear between them. It
provides a protective film which allows for
two toughing surfaces to be separated and
“smoothed”, thus, lessening the friction
between the surfaces. Lubricant chemically
interacts with all surfaces so that contact
only occurs with the smooth and free
lubricant. By this process, abrasive particles
are dissolved into the lubricant, thus making
them also very good solvents and cleaners.
LUBRICATING TOOLS AND
EQUIPMENT
1. Read and analyze the use of
Preventive Maintenance Schedule
form.
2. Determine the types of tools and
machine needed to be lubricated.
3. Fill out a requisition slip form in
releasing the lubricants needed.
4. Secure a borrower’s slip from
your teacher
5. Fill out the slip form correctly
intended for the needed tools.
6. Perform the task according to
the prescribed schedule and the
assigned machine.
7. Perform lubricating procedure.
8. Determine the parts of the
machine that need to be lubricated.
9. Apply thin coat of oil on the parts
that are used for a long period of
time.
10.Open the bearing cover and apply
grease.
11.Apply grease on sealed bearing
with the use of a grease gun.
Steps Lubricating Tools
1. Prepare the materials needed.
2. Select/identify the parts that
have been stock-up.
3. Wear the appropriate personal
protective equipment.
4. Clean the rusty part with a fine
sandpaper.
5. Wipe out the loosen rust.
6. Apply oil and insulated part especially on
the jaw with both handles in upward
position to prevent oil to drip down the
insulation.
7. Move the handle in “out and in”
directions with both hands.
8. Wipe out dirt and excess lubricant.
9. Repeat step 4 and 5 until the stock-up
part loosened well.
10. Store them in the tool cabinet.
11. Observe good housekeeping.
Steps in Lubricating Equipment

1. Turn off the power of machine.

2. Prepare the materials needed.
3. Wear the appropriate personal
protective equipment.
4. Wipe all painted surface with
soft cloth.
5. Clean the dirt using brush
and kerosene and wipe it clean.
6. Apply lubricant in the moving
part/s, refer to the machine
manual.
7. Observe good housekeeping.
8. End of cleaning and
lubrication.
