Classroom interaction

 Education is basically an interaction between educators and learners to achieve educational goals.

 The interaction in classrooms takes place between two people or more, between the teacher and students or students with each
other.

 Is defined as the collaborative exchange of thoughts, feelings, or ideas between two or more people, resulting in a reciprocal
effect on each other.

 Classroom interaction refers to the verbal exchanges among students and between students and teachers. It is part of a
collaborative learning process involving discussions and class participation.

 Speaking and listening are primary skills/ components of classroom interaction.


Learning and teaching involve several forms of interaction between different actors

Teacher-student interaction
This type of interaction allows the teacher to help learners:
 Understand the course’s content
 Identify difficulties and stimulate critical thinking
-The teacher asks questions, answer, and discuss with students
- the teacher talks to the whole class (presenting a text, explaining or giving instructions for an activity)
instructor’s interaction with the whole class is frequent throughout the duration of the course.
Example:
• course announcement
• generalized feedback on activities or assignments

Student –student interaction

 With the growing popularity of students centered approach, the student-student interaction is increasingly valued.
 It is a student –focused instructional mode.
 Teacher creates opportunities to make students interact with each other
Example:

 Peer-evaluation
 Pair work
 Games
 Competitions
 Discussions and presentations
 Projects
 Role play and simulation
 Information gap
 interview

 It is concentrated on how students communicate their ideas with other students

 It focuses the communicative and cooperative work

 They improve their cooperative learning by supporting each other

 It avoids a monotonous, repetitive, and isolating learning environment


 Build activities and assignments that ignite classroom discussion.

 It provides students with more speaking time and it is a great way of getting the student to use and actively produce the target
language.

 It prepares students for one-on-one relationships they will have with work associate, friends etc.

Student- teacher interaction


 It occurs in several forms through various communication channels.
Example:
 Introductions
 feedback
 Teacher interacts with students individually and as a group
 This type of interaction is vital for students because it compares to the relationship they will have in their lives, such as the
relationship with a boss or superior

 instructor’s interaction with the whole class is frequent throughout the duration of the course.
Example:
 course announcement
 generalized feedback on activities or assignments

The role the teacher in classroom interaction


Facilitator: the teacher divide the learners into small groups and give them tasks, projects or assignments.
Role model :
Observor : observe students to generate an innovative learning strategy for helping them
Mentor: the teacher encourages students to work hard and to participate
Motivator: the teacher avoid discouraging students by criticizing their answers.
Director: engage students in the real life drama of improvisation as each communicative event brings its own uniqueness.

How to improve the student interaction / strategies of promoting classroom interaction


 Maximaizing practice time through pair work and group work

 Using collaborative tasks to enhance collaboration in the classroom

 Help student develop social skills (politeness, respect for others…) in order to operate appropriately in any culture.

 Appreciate the uniqueness of individuals


 Provide opportunities for students to express themselves in meaningful ways

 Improving questioning strategies

 Attending to learners’ linguistic level

 Building positive teacher-learner rapport

 Reducing classroom anxiety
