CHALLENGES 5

For the next challenges is concerning about the use of technology in occupational safety and
health. The wall hinder on this effort is staff with lack of training on the new technology.
Since we already knew technologies evolve around us dynamically thus digitalization will
force organization to obey the trend in order for them not to be left behind. Today we live in a
world enabled by technology. Many OHS initiatives can be effectively implemented using the
power of technology. On the other hand, for technology to be fully utilize and put into
practice it would come with the high price of failure and lackluster adoption before
successfully taking over the helm. Unexperienced and inadequate personnel when dealing
to new technology usage might find themselves in hazardous situation. Even if new
technology claims to be “easy to use,” employees need to be trained. No one adapts to a
new technology easily, so we need some assistance to ensure everyone is on board. It also
helps eliminate first-time users’ mistakes, some of which can be quite costly.

Technology advancements have had a significant impact on the sector over the years, both
positively and negatively. They will continue to do so in the next years, altering how people
live and do things. These breakthroughs, such as AI and Big Data, are advancing and will
have a significant impact on the workplace, affecting the ways people work, the
environments in which they work, and the conditions under which they perform their daily
tasks. More importantly, these advances will disrupt patterns of occupational injuries, deaths,
and diseases. This upheaval will provide new problems in workplace occupational health
and safety for managers—challenges that must be overcome in order for firms to develop
trustworthy safety cultures. (Workplace, 2019). One example of manufacturing company
that had issue with technology development is Ong Chuan Hin Rice Mill Sdn. Bhd.
(OCHRM Sdn Bhd) which is located at Jitra, Kedah Darul Aman. In their case they likely
threat by external forces in rice industry to remain competitive with other manufacturer. As
revealed by the rice industry needs to re-align themselves with evolution of technology to
ensure relevance. Nowadays, manufacturing industries opt to rely on machinery equipment
such as automation, robotics and nanotechnology. Despite the robust name, those
machinery if not being taken care cautiously would end in tragedy. The defection of industrial
machine is it will cause large airborne hazard compared to traditional method. It came from
rice grain dust from the process and affect workers with eye irritation, skin allergies and
respiratory system complication.

Later on, OCHRM Sdn. Bhd. stated by its CEO during interview session is that the company
irrigates several safety approaches. To be emphasized, OCHRM Sdn Bhd provides safety
programs such as machinery training, personal protective equipment (PPE), and training for
accident and emergency response. Employee morale and productivity are improved by
health and safety programs. Safety programs must be documented. Employers must
develop an overall safety program to teach their employees about safety and health, as well
as how to manage risks. In addition, employees must maintain all tools, machinery,
equipment, and materials in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Furthermore,
supervisors are responsible for monitoring the products to ensure that they have been used
properly by the employees and that they are maintained and stay in excellent working order.
Every month, the organization does machine maintenance. Employees must understand
how to clean, maintain, recognize, and operate the equipment and machinery. From our own
perspective, we suggest solution involving this technology as strategic enable by offering
new possibilities for visualizing work situations and workplaces as well as evaluating,
planning, and developing work. Various simulation done by companies around the globe for
instance, cockpit simulation to counter fatal incident by using this predictive measure. As this
would reduce the probability of incident occurred during working hours. The company can
also follow the trail of OHS cockpit which is akin to ICU concept where all ventilation intake
being guarded in one central location in order to avoid hazardous substances from
spreading. (Al-Rejal, 2016)
CONCLUSION

Occupation Health and Safety (OHS) refers to the regulations, legislation, policies,
procedures, and activities designed to protect the health, safety, and well-being of
employees and all individuals in an organisation. The most prevalent danger is airborne
hazard, and the most common injury or accident is slips and falls. By implementing
Occupational Safety and Health Practices, the number of workplace accidents and injuries
will be reduced. In conclusion, to continue the rapid economic growth and improve overall
quality of life, rising economies must prioritize OSH. However, several difficulties must be
addressed in the areas of awareness, education, training, business commitment, and
regulatory compliance. These difficulties can be overcome by combining appropriate
proactive and reactive techniques. Therefore, based on our research In the manufacturing
industry, we may distinguish more closely associated forms of Safety and Health Practices,
challenges, benefits of Occupational Safety and Health, categories of hazard and injury or
accident.
