Business angel: (Finance informal), an investor who helps new companies develop by lending
them his own money, which may imply a lot of risk.
Angel investor: (Finance informal), a private person who invests his own money in a project,
especially a new busines: e.g. The majority of small businesses receive money from friends,
family and angel investors.
Venture capital also risk capital: money that is invested in a new company to help it develop
or expand, which may involve a lot of risk but can also bring good profits.
Grant (n) an amount of money that is given by the government or by another institution for a
particular purpose. e.g. The study was supported by a 7,00-grant form a research group
Grant: (v) to agree to give somebody what he asks for, especially formal or legal permission to
do something. e.g. The bank finally granted the company a loan
Loan (n) Money that an organization such as a bank lends, and somebody borrows. e.g. The
government offers low interest loans to small companies.
Loan (v) to lend somebody something or to lend something to somebody, especially money.
e.g. The bank loaned the business more than $250,000.
Off-site working or happening away from the main offices of a business. e.g. There was an off-
site meeting
Grade a measurement of how good or safe something is. e.g. The company downgraded to
non-investment grade.
Expenditure the act of spending or using money; an amount of money that someone spends
during a particular period of time. There was a reduction in government expenditure. e.g. They
are cutting expenditure.
Stock the goods that a business has for sale at a particular time. e.g. This particular model is
temporarily out of stock.
Shelf space the amount of space that a shop has available on its shelves for products. e.g.
Sometimes supermarkets have tight shelf space
Sign off action of signing a letter at the end
Sign something off: to give approval.
