Reflection Log
(Hapag ng Pag-Asa)

Many people may not know him but Joey Velasco is a Filipino artist who is mostly known
for “Hapag ng Pag-asa” which is similar to the Last Supper of Leonardo Da Vinci. It is about
young people experiencing extreme poverty that he visited to show through painting about
their life experiences. Each of their faces had the Lord Jesus Christ painted next to them while
sharing a meal at the dinner table. Each color of the new tomorrow is carefully painted on the
canvas. His masterpiece painting is called “Hapag ng Pag-asa” which shows that despite being
poor, they can still find hope.
For me, this painting symbolizes that we are all God's creation and He is always there for
us, especially for the poor one. I also really felt pity for their life that they are experiencing.
Pushing a cardboard box to provide for the family is no joke. Cleaning a cemetery is no joke
and being a young mother is no joke. Each of them has this lifestyle, I thought I was a lucky
girl. I was raised well, I eat three times a day and I don't make money from garbage. I will
always understand the true view of life.
It will enable us to think and pray for them during these uncertain times. It also brings out
the challenge of extending our hands to our less fortunate brothers and sisters. In our own
simple ways we can do it, it gives us an opportunity to become a blessing to others. Thus, we
can also celebrate by means of exercising our preferential option for the poor

I will also pray to the Lord to help me when I am struggling in life. This document will teach
not only me, but also all Filipinos a lesson. Certainly, People's lives are relieved if we
understand their situation and learn to act in the life we experience. It is a reminder to all of
us that we should be thankful for everything that we have. We should see God's blessings to
all of us in the biggest aspect as possible.
Don’t ever be afraid to express your gratitude. Remember being grateful is your true self.
Being joyful and open is your true self. Enjoying a sense of abundance and appreciation of
yourself and others is a beautiful thing. Spread the importance of experiencing and expressing
thankfulness and gratitude. Accept the small pleasures into your being. It will affect someone
else, and so on. We are all connected, we are all one, and for that we are grateful.
