Module 16: Creating a Volunteer Spirit

Introduction

In this module, your sense of responsibility will be re-awakened as volunteerism becomes the central
subject of discussion. You already learned about the spirit of volunteerism throughout your journey as a
learner but this module is special as it highlights the value of volunteerism in nurturing your academic skills
in the thick of an urgent situation, such as the public health emergency caused by COVID-19. You will gain
ideas that will serve as your foundations and wings for your future success and most importantly, you will
develop a compassionate personality and you can start to make a difference.
In this module, you will learn the value and benefits of volunteerism in the midst of a crisis situation.
You will be equipped with knowledge and ideas as to how and where you are going to support programs and
exhibit your eagerness to get involved, be that in school or in the community, safely and responsibly.

WEEK 1 LET’S TRY THIS : “ADJECTIVE CHALLENGE”

Directions: Write one adjective that you think volunteers possess for every letter in the word “VOLUNTEER”.
An example is already given for the first letter.

KEEP IN MIND : STRENGTHENING VOLUNTEERISM

Volunteerism is doing an action on your own will without expecting anything in return. When you
volunteer, you offer something important that is yours such as your time, your effort, your ideas and your
energy to do something that will benefit others. Volunteerism is often done and completed 8 with others
who share your beliefs, advocacies and goals. Volunteerism is a great example of being of service to a
greater good.
As we all adjust to what we call the New Normal because of the current public health emergency
situation that we have, mass gatherings and close, personal interactions have been cancelled. The avenues
for volunteer works may have shifted but the spirit of volunteerism should be nurtured and enhanced now
more than ever.
Studies have suggested that learners who participate in volunteer works manifest higher self-esteem
and confidence. It can also help them gain new skills such as communication skills, leadership, time
management and decision-making skills.
For learners like you, volunteerism can greatly improve your academic skills. You can utilize these
skills later on in life to reach for your goals.
1. Volunteering helps develop your communication skills as well as your social skills. When you
volunteer, you meet new people, you make new friends and you interact with people of different
personalities and ages. Now that this pandemic happened, our social life is put on a standstill but
nevertheless, we can still make connections using online ways and methods.
2. Volunteering may aid in your general mental health. Because volunteering gives you a sense of
purpose and meaning in what you do and give, you feel more content and happy. Your thoughts are not
cluttered by your own worries and because your minds are occupied by the things that you need to do,
you are always mentally stimulated and much cheerful. This pandemic can make you feel isolated at
times but you must remember that this too shall pass, you just need to hold strong.
3. Volunteering can help in decision making even in choosing your future career. While volunteering,
you can get valuable experiences that may aid you in making good and wise decisions.
4. Volunteering will enhance your leadership potential and problem-solving skills. When you volunteer,
you will learn that you have to think on your feet. You also need to come up with solutions when you
face sudden dilemmas. Volunteering will turn you into a leader because you will realize that in your own
way, you can make a difference.
5. Volunteering boosts your self-confidence. Putting yourself out there for a cause that you believe in
and for the benefit of others is an achievement in itself. Self-esteem can empower one in 9 making more
commitments, in engaging in other projects and in knowing what is truly important in this world.
The following are examples of safe volunteer works during a crisis situation such as the COVID-19
pandemic that you can easily do as teenagers:
 Assist your adult family members, especially the elderly, if they want to be familiar with gadgets so
that they can also be updated with current events and other relevant news and information. It will also
be a way for them to keep in touch with family members, friends and loved ones they do not get to
see in person because of the crisis situation
 Use social media meaningfully and sensibly by not spreading fake news, constantly fact checking,
observing cyber safety and being a responsible digital citizen
 Follow government recommendations and orders strictly and advocate the importance of following
rules in your various social media accounts
 Write thank you or touching letters to people who are helping or who are being affected by the crisis
situation and send it through e-mails
 Volunteer at crisis center hotlines for teens with concerns or issues
 Plant flowers or vegetables at home for your family to enjoy
 Offer free music or dance lessons online
 Post your opinions in social media about caring for the environment and share some ways on how to
show your love for nature

WEEK 2 WHAT I HAVE LEARNED: “I’ AM”

Module 17: I in the Community

Introduction

This module is designed and written with you in mind. This module entitled “I in the community” is
about what your abilities can do for the development of your community if only you will participate in
worthwhile programs and initiatives for the common good particularly during this time of pandemic due to
COVID-19. As a young Filipino learner, you need to know the different issues in your environment such as
the COVID-19 pandemic, drug abuse, cyber safety, bullying, hunger, teenage-pregnancy, and other issues
in the society.

WEEK 3 LET’S TRY THIS : “WHAT IS THE ISSUE?”

1. As a child and a student in this time of new normal, identify five (5) issues or concerns you are experiencing
now in the community.
2. After identifying these five (5) issues and concerns, write them down on the arrows pointing at the boy and
a girl below.

Example:

KEEP IN MIND : ISSUES IN THE COMMUNITY

1. Covid-19 Pandemic

The world now faces another pandemic. Pandemic is defined as an epidemic that spreads over many
countries or even continents. It is more widespread as it affects the global arena. COVID-19 is transmitted
from person to person via droplets, contact, and fomites. It is transmitted when someone talks, sneezes, or
coughs producing ‘droplets’ of saliva containing the COVID-19 virus. These droplets are then inhaled by
another person. Its transmission usually occurs among close contacts – including family members and
healthcare workers.
2. Alternative Classes, Online, Modular, and Blended Learning
The pandemic has brought a lot of effects to the world as well as to the learners. Because of the
pandemic, we are now into online classes, modular classes and blended classes. We need to use tv or radio
only to ensure that no child is left behind in their education. However, because of this many are not able to
cope up with the change in the education system. Both the students and teachers are having a hard time
adjusting to the new normal. Those who are enrolled in the online classes experience problems like Wi-fi or
data connectivity and insufficient load for data that makes online classes quite difficult for some. Meanwhile
those who are with the modular classes, which is most of the learning modality being used in our country,
students and teachers also feel the lack of connection unlike in a face-to-face class. Nevertheless, children
are to answer and to submit their modules based on a schedule at their own pace so as not to pressure them.
Hence, learning may continue in the hearts and minds of our learners.
3. Cyberbullying

Moreover, some of the children spent more time on online activities that may encounter other issues
on cybersafety such as cyberbullying. The present generation are the Generation Z and the Generation Alpha
who are born with the internet on the click of their finger. Their generation is even called digital natives, so it
is inherent to them to be online 24/7 especially those living in highly urbanized cities and the like. But even
in remote barangays cellphone or mobile phone with internet has become quite common. Being online
frequently can be dangerous for children without their parents’ guidance. They can become victims of
cyberbullying - an act of inflicting harm towards others using social media such as Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, and others similar platforms. At the same time, they too can become cyber bullies. It is important for
parents to know the activities of their children whether offline or online. If incidents like this happen, children
may inform their parents, teachers, and other trusted adults so that proper intervention may be given to them.
4. Cyber Child Sex Exploitation
Cyberbullying is just one of the hidden darkness lurking on the internet, another is child pornography
or child sex exploitation. There are people on the internet who may pose as a friend to a child but it turns out
he/she can be a predator who is after the child’s harm. They may ask for children to pose nude or act
indecently in front of the camera for an exchange of money or cash. Unfortunately, there are others who are
close to the children who are the perpetrators of this. Children should be protected against these kinds of
people who could ruin their lives. The police should be notified once there are known activities like these to
rescue these innocent children.
5. Cyber Identity Theft
Another cyber safety issue that may be experienced by children online is identity theft. Other people
may do them harm by stealing important details about them and posing to be them on the internet. This is
common to adults, but it may happen to children as well.
6. Online Games Addiction
The online world can also pose another problem to children in a way that it causes addiction among
others such as addiction to online games. Children spend a lot of time playing online games that can be very
accessible with the use of the mobile phone. This can trigger some children to not focus on their academics
and to neglect their physical needs such as eating, taking a bath, and doing the call of nature because of the
addiction. They hardly put their mobile phones down or leave their workstation, thus putting them in very
dangerous circumstances. The proper use of the internet either desktop, laptop or mobile phone, needs
proper supervision from the adults. This way, children can maximize the positive benefits of the internet such
as a source of information and a way to connect to other people especially their friends and family. These
are important in this time of pandemic.
7. Teenage Pregnancy
In this time of pandemic, a great concern has surfaced such as early or teenage pregnancy. It has
been all over the news, during this pandemic many young girls and young boys have been noted to engage
in premarital sex and became teenage mothers and fathers. During a crisis or after a crisis it has been
reported that there is an increase in teenage pregnancy. The same has happened after Super Typhoon
Yolanda.
Our world is far from being a perfect world, there are issues and challenges that may have not been
mentioned here that we face in our day-to-day living. However, this does not mean that we stop and not act
on it, we have to come up with solutions to address them and so we can live a more peaceful and sustainable
life.
