Assignment 1

What went wrong with Bangladesh Cricket Team?

Bangladesh national cricket team, commonly called as “the tigers” to compare with the Royal Bengal
tiger, which is the national animal of Bangladesh, to symbolize the ferocity and the swiftness of the
team. Yet the hunt of the tigers still seems far-away. The team has a long history of playing in the
international arena. It has an established cricket board, experienced people, high class facilities, yet
something there keeps it from making itself establish as a mature and experienced team. The team’s
highest achievements in World Cup are reaching the Super Eight stage in the 2007 Cricket World Cup
and the Quarter-Final of the 2015 Cricket World Cup. The team also has a record of most consecutive
defeat (21) in test matches. 16 series defeat is the world record in tests held by the team. The tigers
hold the records of consecutive ODI loss (23) and also consecutive ODI (47) without victory. So what
went wrong with Bangladesh cricket team?
Firstly the team lacks consistency, it has a history of uneven performances, winning one match and
losing the next match. Again, Patience is a virtue and the key to success in cricket, which is alarmingly
missing in the player’s mind. Playing as a team rather than a group, understanding the team dynamics,
the coordination between the players, maturity, professionalism, all play a key role in the overall
performance. These qualities seem to be far away from the field. Besides, internal politics and internal
conflicts of the cricket board have smothered the capacity of Bangladesh team to rise as a strong team.
Though cricket is said to be a gentlemen’s game, the team has a reputation of acting the opposite.
Overall the team has failed to reach the height, given the time and opportunity they had. However, the
team still has rooms to grow up to become the best team in the world. With a strong management,
leadership and the best utilization of the years of experience this can become a reality.
