LEADERSHIP

OF

GARY KIRSTEN

INTRODUCTION
1
Good leadership has the ability to make any team or business great. Whether you are a junior
intern, entrepreneur or an experienced business manager, the value of leadership remains a
precious commodity. In 2011, world cup one thing which get shadowed is the off-field
leadership. World cup winning coach, Gary Kirsten is one of the best off-field leaders who
guided team from off-field to achieve the new heights.

Gary Kirsten is a South African cricket coach and former cricketer. He has played 101 Test
matches and 185 One Day Internationals for South Africa between 1993 and 2004, mainly as an
opening batsman. He had made history by becoming first-ever Protest to play 100 Test matches.
He officially started as coach on 1 March 2008.

A highly accomplished batsman himself, he brought a considerable amount of experience with

himself which helped younger players to learn from him and that gave confidence to younger
players to perform in every situation.

It was not an easy task for Gary Kirsten to start as Indian coach because he was not having any
prior experience of coaching. He was working as a batting consultant for an African club. There
was a huge pressure on him to start as Indian coach because India lost badly in 2007 world cup
and there was no any world cup win since 1984. According to Gary the main difference between
Asian countries and other continental teams is that Asian players use to play with natural talents
while other continent’s players use to play with team efforts. So, it was important for Gary to
introduce the team efforts in the team.

Gary Kirsten has been praised by all player for improving and enhancing their playing
techniques, motivating them and discussing tactics that could be deployed on the field. The
results could be clearly seen within months. He was one of the most important key behind the
improvement of all players. In 2010, prior to the start of India’s tour to South Africa, Indian
captain M.S. Dhoni described him as “The best thing to happen to Indian cricket.”

There were lots of such reasons as discussed above to choose Gary Kirsten for our case. The
analysis of his attempts for Indian cricket team and his working style helps us to link it directly
with different leadership theories and styles.

ABOUT CASE
2
We are choosing Gary Kirsten over because he is able to connect to all levels of the players. The
leader back their team in every decision and that’s what he always used to do. It was not about
who played well and who didn't. When one player was down, two others covered up his game,
when two great players were out of the game that only meant nine great players were in queue
waiting to conquer. This is the environment he created in dressing room.

In this case there are many lessons which shows that leader only want his players to improve
through his experience. This case includes lessons like leadership, maturity, management, team
spirit, importance of team culture, importance of trust etc. He is package of all these qualities.

At the time of his tenure, he earns the respect of every team member along Sachin, Sehwag,
Dhoni and Gambhir. Everyone had witnessed the moment after the win of team India in world
cup 2011 final when Indian players lifted him on their shoulder which shows the respect earned
by him because of his brilliant work during his tenure.

During 2008-2011, many players performance improved during that time, average player started
playing good and good player started to come in world ranking. This transformation happened
because he backed their player on a bad day of their game and that help players to play their
natural game. The best thing of any leader is that LEADERS LEAD THEIR TEAM FROM
FRONT and that’s exactly what Gary Kirsten always did. Whenever team losses he goes to press
conference and takes the responsibility of that loss and when team wins, he sends team member
to press conference which shows that he shares the credit with team. The faith of coach is also
repaid by his players with a good performance. Leaders always want to improve the performance
of their player and players repaid the faith of his coach with his performance.

IMPORTANCE OF CASE

3
Leadership is an important role in life. It is a part of management where it helps to maximize the
efficiency of people. A leadership quality builds the confidence and also enhances the self
believe. In each and every organization a leader is required to absorb leadership quality.
Leadership also tells that how to lead in each and every section of life with ethical value. We
create a note on goal, mission and target but we often forget the word belief and this word comes
when you are addicted to take the lead and it shows your leadership skill. Our hero in this
assignment in Gary Kirsten. Really, we had many options to think about but why Gary Kirsten,
why not others?

Actually, we think that if India won or lifted the world cup, there was no doubt that wonderful
captain was there, handsome players were there but a good coach was also there to lead the team.
In cricket, no matter what players you have and what are your strategies on the field but off field
you need a good coach who always keep eye he was don each and every player, each and every
thing happening on field (opposition’s actions, response of our players etc.). Gary did not act as a
coach but he was ding as a player too because without going deeper in that matter you would not
be a good a coach or mentor. If you only instruct the rules on player there would be a directing
strategy but if you want to exchange the decision between players and coach you need a
delegating strategy. On the field MS Dhoni was there and off the field Gary Kirsten stood for the
Indian cricket team.

Key qualities of Gary Kirsten as a leader: -

1. INITIATES ACTION: - Leader who always believes in taking first action and start
communication among sub-ordinates.

2. MOTIVATION: - A leader always provides a motivation them to his followers so that

followers confidence would go high and they will be motivated.

3. PROVIDING GUIDANCE: - Every leader has age and experience and from this age
and experience he takes beneficial guidance and that guidance helps in achieving goals.
4. CREATING CONFIDENCE: - A leader always boosts up the followers to go in
achieving goal. Without confidence no warrior can win a war.so it is responsibility of a
leader to enhance the confidence of his followers.

4
5. BUILDING MORALE: - Morale means willing to do work with co-operation of
employees. A leader must be a morale booster, so that his followers are ready to work
with co-operation and they will know how to work with collaboration.

6. BUILDS WORK ENVIRONMENT: - A good environment is very much required to do

work without any conflicts. So, it’s a responsibility of a leader to avoid conflicts among
followers and create a good or friendly environment in organization.

7. CO-ORDINATION: - Every sub-ordinate should know about co-ordination because it

will help a lot in achieving goal. Co-ordination creates a healthy relation between two
parties for same goal and this role should be played by a leader to maintain this policy.

ANALYSIS
Team leadership lessons from World Cup 2011

5
On April 2, 2011, the world witnessed one of the finest games played in Indian sports history.
We watched the match and every replay, and couldn't help but be inspired. We believe that just
because you are in the game doesn't mean you are playing to win. Just because you have a job or
you are in a position of leadership does not mean you will be successful. Success is a wholly
different game.

High Stakes

The stakes in the world cup were high because investors and supporters believed in the team.
The belief was earned through endless practice hours and committed and consistent team play
before the big game. The players just needed to prove them right. Even in an organisation, the
stakes are high, for investors and supporters. The belief in your ability to deliver results is what
gets you recruited. Prove your seniors right.

The hunger to win

The hunger to win was evident in every move, in the performance of every player in every single
game. You could see the desire for victory from the moment the players set foot on the field till
the last ball bowled.

Victory for the Team

The team was clear they wanted to win the world cup for Sachin Tendulkar. When attention
moves away from personal gain to team gain, magic happens. Victory is a collective
phenomenon but try as you might, you cannot be successful alone. You win when the team wins.
When the team wins, you win.

Unfaltering Leadership

A good leader leads from the front. When the start of the game was tough, Dhoni jumped into the

6
game. That is remarkable leadership, a much-needed virtue in the corporate world. A great leader
will roll up his sleeves in times of crisis and steer the team clear of any danger.

Staying in the Game

In times of crisis, it's more important to stay in the game than lose to panic. When two wickets
were lost early in the game, the team focused on playing safe. Winning is a balance of wickets
and score. Only when you secure one, can you dare to risk the other.

Unity of Purpose

When the players were on the field doing their job, the nation had united in support. Support and
cheer play an important part in victory. When every person in the company unites for the
purpose of achieving goals, the cup finds its way home.

Team Support

The team backed up their leader in every decision. It was not about who played well and who
didn't. When one player was down, two others covered up his game. When two great players
were out of the game that only meant nine great players were in queue waiting to conquer.

The moment of truth

Every team player has his moment of truth. Did you give of your best? When every team player
answer in the affirmative, that is true victory. When the team is committed to giving their best
shot, then the collective score is what leads to organisational victory.

Graceful win

7
India won the world cup but they did not make Sri Lanka losers. The game was played with so
much grace that Sri Lanka claimed that they enjoyed every moment of the game. When you
make a fan out of your opponent, you have truly won. The entire game was played with dignity
and poise. There was no display of aggression or disrespect at any point. The focus was always
on playing a great game.

Playing a great game is success. Playing with grace and dignity is real success. Playing for a
purpose is success. Using pressure from the opponent to better your teamwork and performance
is real success. Success is playing your part so well that the game becomes more memorable than
the cup.

In all the above discussed points the role of Gary Kirsten played a great role as coach and leader.

“A LEADER IS BEST WHEN PEOPLE BARELY KNOW HE EXISTS, WHEN HIS

WORK IS DONE, HIS AIM IS FULFILLED, THEY WILL SAY: WE DID IT
OURSELVES.”
