Q3_W1_Science 8_Compare mitosis and meiosis and their role in the cell
division (S8LT-IVd-16)

Introduction:

There are two types of cell division: mitosis and meiosis. Most of the
time when people refer to cell division, as mitosis, the process of making new
body cells. Meiosis is the type of cell division that creates egg and sperm
cells.

Activity 2 – Phases of Cell Cycle

Direction: The diagram below shows cells in various phases of the cell cycle.
Note that the cells are not arranged in oeder in which the cell cycle occurs.
Use the diagram to answer the questions 1-10.

__________ 1. Which cell is in metaphase?

__________ 2. Which cell shows prophase stage?
__________ 3. Which cell is in the first phase of mitosis?
__________ 4. Which cell is in Anaphase?
__________ 5. Which cell is in interphase stage?
__________ 6. Which cell is undergoing cytokinesis?
__________ 7. In cell A, what structure is labeled X?
__________ 8. Which cell shows telophase?
9-10. Short answer.
Why is mitosis important?

Activity 3- Comparison between Mitosis and Meiosis

Direction: Compare mitosis from meiosis using the Venn Diagram. Use
the following description inside the box.

involves only one set of stages for only reproductive or derm cells go
the cell to reproduce through this process
the end result is 2 daughter cells sister chromatids do not separate
from one parent cell during the anaphase stage
sister chromatids separate when in the end result is 4 daughter cells
the anaphase stage from one parent cell
both handle cell reproduction the amount of chromosomes in the
parent cell halve when turned into
daughter cell
interphase stage is the same occurs in stages

Mitosis or Meiosis or both by putting a check ( / ) in the appropriate
column.

Characteristics Mitosis Meiosis

Two division

One division

Associated with growth and asexual

reproduction

Involves duplication of chromosomes

chromosome number is maintained

daughter cells are identical to parent cells

Produced gametes

process occurs in body cells

Daughter cells are not identical to parent

cells

Process occurs in reproductive organs

Chromosome number is halved

Two daughter cells are produced

Associated with sexual reproduction
