BODY OF WORK – LONG RESPONSE

Photography is the conceptual study of objects in different environments. Photography stands

for drawing with light. Being a photographer to me means to be able to create such
environments to take creative and aesthetic photos, to please myself. This semester in
photography we looked at a wide variety or briefs and artists, but the briefs that I will be
discussing about are 1, 5 &6. Brief 1 was fully inspired by Jill Greenberg; brief 5 was
depicted and inspired by the artist Sebastian Magnani; brief 6 was inspired by Slinacku. All 3
of these amazing photographers have influenced my photography in such different ways, all
making my photography as good as it is today.

Brief 1
The whole of brief 1 was inspired by jill Greenburg. She is an American photographer and
has captured many great photos. An example of jill Greensburg’s work would be ‘paintings.
This photograph is basically of different shades of black, white, and grey paint. The artwork
has used very dark colours. Even though the photograph has a glossy finish to it, there are
some noticeable cracks in it. The lines in the shape are all curved and/or wavy. The technique
of blending colours is used in the photograph of Jill Greenburg. This relates to the brief since
it has also inspired some of my own practices. Brief 1, take a closer look, refers to looking at
the image closely and focusing on the fine detail. Jill Greenburg’s photograph relates to my
own photography practices.

Colour bomb, which is one of my own photos was inspired by jill Greensburg. The photo was
taken in February, inside of an art room. This photograph heavily conveys brief 1: take a
closer look. The way I interpreted this brief was by looking at jill Greensburg’s works and
taking a lot of inspiration from it. The subject matter of the photograph are the several
colours bouncing of one another. The concept of the brief was to take a photo that drives
inspiration from jill Greensburg, and this photograph has done just that. Colour bomb is a
closeup shoot of the mixture of colours, mixed using a pallet knife. The photograph I have
taken relates to jill Greensburg painting photographs, as she also mixes colours together. The
overall impact my photo has on the audience is positive as the colours that were used are
bright. I believe that colour bomb is successful at conveying the given brief and the artist that
we have studied, jill Greensburg

Brief 5
Sebastian Magnani is the inspiration for the 5th brief, which was reflect on the situation. He is
from Switzerland. An example of his art is ‘Reflections’. Sebastian Magnani’s artwork shows
the reflection of a tree, on a mirror, that is placed in the middle of a grass field. The colour in
the image mainly greens and browns. The texture of the photograph is somewhat of a rough
texture. The only fully curved shape in the photograph is the mirror, the rest of the shapes in
the image are not fully curved or they are straight/wavy lines. Sebastian Manganin’s artwork
perfectly fits into the assigned brief of ‘reflect on the situation’. The brief was asking us to
capture a photo with reflections, and Sebastian Magnani’s photograph of reflections does just
that. The photographer relates to my original artwork because my photograph was inspired by
him.

A photograph of mine that was inspired by Sebastian Magnani is puddle. The photograph was
taken outside on a bright and sunny day. The photography conveys brief 5: reflect on the
situation. Even though my photograph isn’t exactly like what Sebastian Magnani would
generally take his reflect photos this was my interpretation of it. The way I interpreted the
brief was that inside of making a tree the thing that is reflected, why not make the water the
main point of focus. The subject matter of the waterwork is the water, and the puddle it has
created. The photograph conveys the brief because it shows a reflect of something, in this
cause of water. To capture Puddle, the shoot was a closeup, the photo itself was taken by
pouring water on the mirror and just experimenting with that until we see the final product.
This photograph is related to the artist we studied, as its base concept of reflection can be
shown. The overall impact this can have on the audience is that it can bring memories of
water puddles, and their experiences with them. I am confident that this photograph has
conveyed the brief to its full potential with my own twist on it. In this brief the artist we were
taking inspiration from was Sebastian Magnani and my artwork easily fits into the studied
brief of reflections.

Brief 6
Slinacku is the artist who has inspired brief 6, bring me to life. He is from the United
Kingdom. An example of his work is First Date. This photograph is basically of a boy,
holding a daisy, that is facing downwards. We can comprehend from the photo that the boy
may have been left a lone of the date. The texture of the background is rough and stony. The
colours used are also dark shades. This gives the artwork an overall gloomy affect. Slinacku’s
first date photograph has a dark tone. The photograph relates the brief, as the artist Slinacku
also uses small people figures in an everyday environment. The brief, bring me to life, was
inspired by Slinacku. Slinacku’s photography links to my own because it has been inspired
by the same practice.

Crashlanding is the name of my photograph I have taken from brief 6. It was taken in early
May when there were still leaves on the trees. The photograph was taken outside on a branch
of a tree. Crashlanding conveys brief 6, which is about bringing tiny little people to life, well.
The way I interpreted the brief was by taking the photograph with tiny people, but a bigger
object that helps support the tiny people figurines. The subject matter for this image is the
airplane and the 2 tiny people. Crashlanding conveys the brief 6 because it interprets what it
would look like if an airplane crashed and fell. The camera technique was used was to shoot
the shot at a medium-low angle. The photograph was taken by placing the plane and the two
people on a tree, with the help of blue tack to hold them in place. The idea of getting stuck
after your plane crashed is what I was trying to capture. This photograph relates to Slinacku,
and his photos are well. The overall impact of Crashlanding can be positive and negative.
Even though the shot itself is beautiful and aesthetic, it could bring back bad memories to
some people, who might’ve experienced this. This photo is successful at conveying the brief.
Slinacku has inspired me to create this beautiful artwork and it nicely fits in the given brief.

There are many things that I have learnt about photography, I’ve learnt that photography isn’t
just taking any photos randomly, in fact it is taking photos with time and effort. The
photographs I have studied have influenced by own work, by pushing me to use different
angles, and focus on different things, to capture the best photo possible. The briefs that I have
studied play a big part of how I look at photographs and photography now. The briefs have
affected my own work because I try and in cooperate the techniques I have learnt in the
briefs. Photography this semester has been a joy to study. Even though some briefs were
harder than other, I am really pleased with what I captured and ended up with as a result.
