TOLERANCES & FITS
 It is impossible to obtain a certain dimension of a metal
part exactly even with the best machines and
workmanship. The actual size will be larger or smaller than
the required size. The difference between the largest and
smallest permissible dimension is called the tolerance.

when assembled.
The minimum size of the hole is either greater than or, in
the extreme case, equal to the maximum size of the shaft.

 0.05 C ˂ P ≤ 0.1 C Normal load
 0.1 C ˂ P ≤ 0.15 C Heavy load
 P ˃ 0.15 C Very heavy load

MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING
Bearing Mounting & Dismounting
 The various bearing types and sizes require different
mounting methods.
 Principle fits for rolling bearings are the type of fit is
described by the terms interference fit (tight fit), transition
fit and sliding fit (loose fit). These seats or fits are the result
of the combined effects of the bearing tolerances for the
bore, for the outside diameter and the ISO tolerances for
shaft and housing.
 Depending on the individual conditions these can be
mechanical, hydraulic or thermal.

Hydraulic Pumps
MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING
Cold mounting & dismounting for cylindrical bore bearing
Hammer & Mounting Sleeve
 This method is suitable for small bearings (< 80 mm).
 With non-separable bearings, the ring that is to have the
tighter fit should generally be mounted first.
 If the fit is not too tight, small bearings may be driven into
position by applying a hammer blows to a sleeve placed
against the bearing ring face.

Hydraulic Pumps
MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING
Cold mounting & dismounting for cylindrical bore bearing
Hammer & Mounting Sleeve
 The blows should be evenly distributed around the ring to
prevent the bearing from tilting or skewing. The use of a
sleeve enables the mounting force to be applied centrally.
 It is important that the bearing rings, cages and rolling
elements or seals do not receive direct blows and that the
mounting force must never be directed through the rolling
elements.
Hydraulic Pumps
MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING
Cold mounting & dismounting for cylindrical bore bearing
Hammer & Mounting Sleeve
 If a non-separable bearing is to be pressed on to the
shaft and into the housing bore at the same time, the
mounting force has to be applied equally to both rings
and the abutment surfaces of the mounting tool must lie
in the same plane.

Hydraulic Pumps
MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING
Cold mounting & dismounting for cylindrical bore bearing
Extractor or Puller
 This way is usually used for dismounting small and
medium sized cylindrical bore bearings.
 The extractor or puller should be applied to the tight
fitting ring.

Hydraulic Pumps
MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING
Cold mounting & dismounting for cylindrical bore bearing
Mechanical & Hydraulic Press
 This type is useful for all sizes of bearings with
cylindrical bore and it is a suitable way for mounting and
dismounting.

Mounting Dismounting
Hydraulic Pumps
MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING
Hot mounting & dismounting for cylindrical bore bearing
 The force needed to mount a bearing increases rapidly with
bearing size, larger bearings cannot easily be pressed on to
a shaft or into a housing because of the large mounting
force required.
 Therefore, the bearing, or one bearing ring, is heated
before mounting.
 Never heat a bearing to a temperature greater than 125 ᵒC,
however, because the material may change metallurgically
and produce alterations in diameter or hardness.
Hydraulic Pumps
MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING
Hot mounting & dismounting for cylindrical bore bearing
 Bearings with shields or seals should not be heated above
80 ᵒC because of their grease fill or seal material.

 When a bearing requires an interference fit in the housing,

a temperature increase in the housing comparing with
bearing from 20 to 50 ᵒC is normally sufficient.

Hydraulic Pumps

Hot mounting & dismounting for cylindrical bore bearing
Oil Bath
 The main advantage of oil bath that it ensures and even
heating and thus it maintain the bearing at a certain
temperature.
 For prevention of bearing contamination, the oil and the
bath must be kept in a clean condition.
 Never place a bearing directly in contact with the sides or
bottom of a heater of the oil.

 The heating plate is being adjusted to set temperature 125 ᵒC.
 Bearings with shields or seals can be heated by the heating
plate after setting temperature to 80 ᵒC or 90 ᵒC maximum
but must taking into account that the bearing must be
separated by a sleeve between the plate and the bearing

 For mounting procedure, heat the heating ring to about
250 ᵒC, place it around the bearing inner race and press the
