Using the Wind

What is wind?
Wind is air moving from one place to another.
How are winds formed?
1- The sun warms up different parts of the sea and land.

2- The warmer parts warm the air above them.

3- The warmer air is lighter than the surrounding air, so it rises.

4- In other places the air is cooled and becomes heavier, so it sinks.

5- The wind blows because cold air moves to replace the warmer
air that has risen.
When does the land warm up
more quickly?

On a hot day, the land

warms up more
quickly than the sea.
Why does the wind blow in opposite
direction at night?

The wind blows in opposite

direction at night because the land
cools more quickly than the sea.

What did the Chinese use kites for a
long time ago?

The Chinese used kites

to frighten enemies.
What were early windmills used for?

They were used

to pump water
or to grind corn
into flour.
What do we call modern windmills?

Today modern
windmills are called
wind turbines or
wind generators.
How can we differentiate between wind turbines/
generators and oil (coal or natural gas)?

The wind is a source of energy

which does not pollute the air
and will never run out. The
wind is one kind of renewable
energy.
Describe wind
turbines/generators briefly.
They have large
blades like propellers,
and when these turn
they drive generators
that produce
electricity.
Mention three ways we benefit from wind.

polluting the air.
