James Baldwin Precis

In his article “A Talk to Teachers” (1963), James Baldwin proposes awareness towards

the racism taught throughout the school system, and that now is the time for African American

citizens to continue to fight for their own justice and rights. Baldwin is able to create a

connection with his readers when he discusses the importance of addressing injustices, speaking

upon the major flaws in American education, and by informing the nation that change needs to

happen urgently as he proposes himself with intense diction, reflecting on his own personal

experiences, and by listing the obvious faults in the system. His emphasis on having the US

understand where the education system went wrong throughout history can motivate teachers in

order to have them teach proper African American history meaning the harsh reality of it, as well

as bring change to the imperfections such as the flaws within the system. He appeals to an

audience that is encouraged to develop America’s education system positively as he provides

them with a urgent and intense tone, needed for younger generations to recognize that it is a

necessity for American schools to be teaching the right information, and as a major call to action

for change to come in terms of the fight for justice.
