My Art Statement

My art piece helps to symbolize the idea that if marginalized communities work together

to protest and peacefully fight for equality, they will have a greater impact on society. The hands

stack up one on another, all working together to cover up the negative words such as

“inequality.” As each new hand is added, the words “equality” and “civil rights” start to form.

Only when all of the hands are stacked up together will the viewer be able to read the words on

the top. Taking the hands out of the stack has the opposite effect, meaning the fewer people that

fight for their civil rights, the less of the impact. Without humans wanting to fight for their rights

and stand up for what they believe in, there will be no significant change.

The essential question states, “What are human’s responsibilities for civil rights?” My art

piece answers this question because the hands represent humans coming together to fight for

their rights. Without all of the hands in the middle, “inequality” is revealed. A human’s

responsibility for civil rights is to respect others. Nondiscrimination, awareness, education,

advocacy, and support are all part of the responsibilities of humans. Having ethical

responsibilities would ensure everyone’s actions align with principles of equality and fairness,

but also if humans all loved. Having this quality in every day life would bring humans together

and lead to a more peaceful future, creating a change in society that would positively impact

everyone.
