MAJOR ASSIGNMENT: LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPES

STEP 1: DATA COLLECTION

1. Form a group.
2. Determine the area of research. City/Commune/ specific place or area.
- Eg: you may select “around Place Jourdan as your research area, and it may
comprise more than one street.
3. Determine the focus of your data collection. Decide if you are taking pictures on the
public/semi-private display, and if they are official/non-official. For the units of analysis,
see below for a full list of examples.
4. Take pictures! The minimum requirement is 10, but we recommend you to take as many
as you can so you have more room for deciding later what fits better your analysis.

N.B: You are focusing on how English interacts with all the other languages you will encounter.
Make sure English is present in your pictures!

• Free professions (eg. lawyers, vets, doctors, dentists)
• Institutions/organisations (eg. Red Cross, hospitals, gas companies)
• (Semi-)public buildings (e.g. libraries, churches, museums, bus stops, stations,
sports buildings, cinema's)
• Advertising (billboards, pillars, videowalls)
• Private residences (be careful, consent might be needed)
• Other (eg. graffitti, tags, slogans)
