Insect Biodiversity

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
A.) Explain the importance of insect biodiversity.
B.) Differentiate between natural enemy and pests.
C.) Construct at least (1) type of mechanical trap for specific variety of
insect.

Biodiversity
Includes the variety of ecosystems which includes community of organisms within
particular habitats and the physical conditions under which they live.

POPULATION
Is all the organisms that both belong to the same species and live in the same
geographical area.

Community
is an assemblage or two or more populations of different species occupying the same
geographical area

MAJOR INSECT ORDERS


Coleoptera
are the most successful order of insects when it comes to number of species. beetles
are the ones who represent the coleoptera.
Lepidoptera
They are among the best known insect species, especially the colorful diurnal group.
Hymenoptera
This order includes bees, wasps,ants and etc.
Diptera
These are the true flies that are found nearly everywhere.
Hemiptera
This order includes the heteroptera or true bugs and homoptera which
made up of cicadas, leaf-hoppers, tree hoppers, plant hoppers and aphids.
Odonata
These insects are commonly known as dragonflies or anisoptera.
Orthoptera
These includes grasshopper, crickets and katydids.
Thysanoptera
an order of insects comprising the thrips and including various important plant pests.

Natural vs. Enemy Pest


What is a natural enemy?
The natural enemies of plant pests are considered as farmers' friends. Various
beneficial organisms that can help the farmer to keep pests (and some diseases) under
control and prevent them from causing economic damage.
What is a pest?
an insect or small animal that is harmful or damages crops: common pests such as rats,
mice, or cockroaches.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRAPS


1. Pitfall trap- For ground dwelling insect
2. Pan trap and interception traps – For flying insects
3. Sweep net- For grassland insects
