steam machine
The engine or steam engine was used extensively during the Industrial Revolution, in whose development it played
an important role to move machines and devices as diverse as pumps, locomotives, and marine engines, among
others. The modern steam engines used in the generation of electric power are not positive displacement as those
described, but are turbomachines; that is to say, they are traversed by a continuous flow of steam and receive the
generic name of steam turbines. At present, the alternative steam engine is an engine that is rarely used except for
auxiliary services, since it has been displaced especially by the electric motor in industry and by the internal
combustion engine, unlike the first machine.

The first rudimentary steam engine was the aeolipile created by Hero of Alexandria, a Greek mathematician and
engineer in first-century Roman Egypt. The First Industrial Revolution was based on the steam engine which, from
the end of the 18th century in England until almost the middle of the 19th century, prodigiously accelerated the
economic development of many of the main countries of Western Europe and the United States. Only in the
interface between 1890 and 1930 did the coal-powered steam engine give way to other internal combustion
engines: those powered by hydrocarbons derived from petroleum.
