- The discovery of diamond in Kimberley in 1867 led to an increase in the population

urban area
- People started to build houses, offices and shops. This meant that the building
industry developed.
- Transport developed, as more factory goods were being shipped from Britain to
South Africa to be sold to the mines
- Better roads were built to transport the goods and equipment from the ports at the
coast to the rands
- Railways lines meant that more people who wanted to work in the gold could now
get there by train. New towns around the station grew up
- Farmers sent their produce grain by train to the larger towns
