Basic Concepts of Probability

What is Probability?
- A numerical measure indicating the chance or likelihood for a particular
event to occur.
- Usually expressed as a ration namely by a fraction, decimal, or percentage.
Experiment – Refers to any situation activity that involves chance. It can be in the
form of making observations or taking measurements. (Tossing a coin) / (Rolling a
die) / (Picking a card)
Outcome – Is any possible result of an experiment. (Tossing a coin – Head & Tail) /
(Rolling a die – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Sample Space - Is the complete list of all possible outcomes of an experiment.
(Tossing a coin – HH, HT, TH, TT)

FUNDAMENTAL COUNTING PRINCIPLE

- A method to determine the number of ways multiple independent events
can occur.
Example 1 – Rolling a dice twice
(6)(6) = 36
Example 2 - Tossing a coin 5 times
(2)(2)(2)(2)(2) = 2^5 = 32
Example 3 - Rolling 2 dice
(6)(6) = 36
