1. Arithmetic mean:
Arithmetic average is also called as Mean. Arithmetic average of a series is the figure obtained
by dividing the total value of the various items by their number.
2. State any tow merits of mode.
(i) Mode is very simple measure of central tendency
(ii) Mode is not at all affected by the extreme values.

3. What is standard deviation?

Standard deviation is the most important measure of dispersion. It is defined as positive square-
root of the arithmetic mean of the squares of the deviations of the given observation from their
arithmetic mean and is denoted by σ .

4. Find the median for the following data : 25,26,23,29,30,37,39.

To find median, arrange the data into ascending order: 23,25,26,29,30,37,39.
Here n=7(odd)
Hence median=(n+1)/2 th item in the list
=(7+1)/2=8/2=4th item.
(i.e) median = 29.

5. Find the first and third quartile of the following data: 57, 58, 61, 42, 38,65,72, 66,70.
Step-1: arrange the data into ascending order:
38,42,57,58.61,65,66,70,72
N=9 (odd)
1st quartile is Q1=(n+1)/4 th observation
=10/4=2.5th observation.
Since it is decimal, Q1=2nd observation+[(0.5)(3rd observation-2nd observation)]
=42+[0.5(15)]=49.5
3rd quartile is Q3=3(10/4)th observation
=7.5th observation
=7th observation+[(0.5)(8th observation-7th observation)]
=66+[(0.5)(70-66)]=66+2=68

6. Find the range and coefficient of range for the following data: 27,30,35,36,38,40,43
Range= Largest-Smallest value in the list
=43-27=16
coefficient of range=(L-S)/(L+S)=16/70=0.2285

7. Define discrete random variable with an example.

A discrete random variable is a random variable X, whose possible values constitute finite set of
values or countably infinite set of values.
Example: In the experiment of throwing a coin twice, the sample space S is
S={HH,TH,HT,TT}. Let X be a random variable chosen such that X(S)={the number of heads}.

8. Define probability mass function.

If X is a discrete random variable which takes the values x 1,x2,x3,… such that P(X=xi)=pi then pi
is called the probability function or probability mass function, provided p i(i=1,2,3,…) satisfy the
following conditions.

(i) pi≥0, for all I, and (ii) ∑ pi =1.

9. A die is rolled once and if X is the number that turns up then find the probability distribution of
X.
X 1 2 3 4 5 6
P(X) 1/61/ 1/6 1/ 1/6 1/6 1/6
6 6
10. (i) 4.86
(ii) 5a+10b+30c=76, 10a+30b+100c=243, 30a+100b+354c=851, a=65.858,b= -101.4,c=25.357
11 (a)( i ) ∑ f =890 , ∑ fx=17280 , ∑ f d 2=19430, S.D=4.67, var=21.831

(a) (ii) x́=70 , ý=72, ∑ d x 2=1634 , ∑ d y 2=727 , ∑ dx dy =489766. r=0.83

(b) (i) a=1/81 , P(2<X<6)=P(X=3,4,5)=1/3,

F(0)=1/81, F(1)=4/81, F, F(2)=9/81 , F(3)=16/81 , F(4)=25/81 , F(5)=36/81 , F(6)=49/81,

F(8)=1.
(b)(ii)

X 1 2 3 4

P(X) 15 10 30 6
61 61 61 61
F(X) 15 25 55 61
61 61 61 61
